ERNESTO DARANAS’ “BEHAVIOR (CONDUCTA)” FROM CUBA WINS AUDIENCE AWARD AT SANTA BARABAR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN WAVE FILM FESTIVAL

Santa Barbara, CASBIFF’s second annual “Wave Film Festival” concluded on Sunday with Ernesto Daranas’ Behavior (Conducta) from Cuba winning the Audience Award sponsored by the Santa Barbara Independent. This second edition highlighted eleven brand new Spanish and Latin American films from the following countries: Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Cuba and Spain with three from the Basque region.

Noted Mickey Duzdevich, The Wave Director, “This Wave was an amazing success and left attendees with an everlasting appreciation for Spanish and Latin American cinema. Behavior is such a beautiful and touching film, it’s no wonder that it is one of the most heralded Cuban films of the last decade. It is well deserving of our audience award.”

Behavior (Conducta) is a Cuban drama written and directed by Ernesto Daranas and stars Alina Rodríguez, Armando Valdés Freire, Silvia Águila and Yulet Cruz. Behavior was Cuba’s official submission for the 87th Academy Awards and has been winning awards at several film festivals including best film, director, actress, script and audience awards.

The film follows Chala, an eleven year old whom lives alone with his drug addict mother. He trains fighting dogs for a living, and this world of violence sometimes surfaces when he is at school. Carmela is his sixth grade teacher, for whom the boy feels affection and respect. One day she becomes ill and musts give up the school for several months. The new teacher, unable to understand Chala’s behavior, sends him off to a reeducation school. When Carmela returns, she rebels against this measure and other transformations her class has been subjected to. The relation-ship between the veteran teacher and the boy grows stronger, but this mutual commitment will jeopardize their continuance at the school.

The Wave Film Festival will return this summer on July 15 through July 19th and will highlight eleven brand new French Films over the five days at the Riviera Theatre. Passes go on sale next week at www.sbiff.org.
