Maiza Hixson to join Santa Barbara County Arts Commission Staff as Visual Arts Coordinator/Curator of Collections

The County Arts Commission is pleased to announce that Maiza Hixson has been hired
as the new Visual Arts Coordinator/Curator of Collections. She will be joining Arts
Commission staff September 28th and will be introduced to the community at the
opening reception for the Santa Barbara Printmakers exhibition at the Channing Peak
Gallery, October 1st between 5-8pm.

Ms. Hixson is a socially engaged artist and curator
who has extensive museum and curatorial
experience. She served as the Gretchen Hupfel
Curator of Contemporary Art at the Delaware Center
for the Contemporary Arts from 2010-2015. She
worked for the Fabric Workshop and Museum in
Philadelphia and was Associate Curator of the
Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati from 2006-
2009. Prior to this, she held a curatorial fellowship in
the Contemporary Art Department at the J.B. Speed
Art Museum in Louisville, KY. Ms. Hixson received her
MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies from the
University of Louisville and completed Post
Baccalaureate Study in Art Theory, Criticism, History, and Painting at the School of the
Art Institute of Chicago. She received a B.A. in French and lived and worked in
Montpellier, France as an undergraduate.

Hixson has curated numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Wilmington Trap
Stars: A Street Art Exhibition (2014), Radical Participation: Four Interactive Exhibitions
(funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation),Young Country: Images of the Rural in
Contemporary Art (2011); American Idyll: Contemporary Art and Karaoke (2008), and
Oh Boy: Men and Masculinity (2007). Additionally, she has lectured widely on
contemporary art at institutions and universities across the country and has taught
courses on art, curating, and writing at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA and
Towson University in Baltimore, MD.
