Opera Santa Barbara’s Steven Sharpe to Speak at
Antioch University Santa Barbara

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) – Antioch University Santa Barbara presents The A-B-Cs of Building an Opera with Steven Sharpe, General Director of Opera Santa Barbara, on Monday, September 12, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., on its campus at 602 Anacapa Street. This event is free and open to the public.

What exactly does it take to produce an opera? Steven answers that question through a multimedia presentation that illustrates the step-by-step process of creating a polished performance. He details the multitude of elements – singing, orchestra, dance, sets, costumes, chorus – that must coalesce into the final spectacle. Opera is the most elaborate of all the classical art forms in that so many disparate pieces and talents are involved. Steven will include footage of past productions and plans for the coming Opera Santa Barbara season: Bizet’s Carmen, Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, and Puccini’s La Rondine.

According to Barbara Greenleaf, Antioch’s Director of Institutional Advancement, “We are delighted to have Steven Sharpe join the list of outstanding speakers in our Antioch in Conversation… community dialogues. Previously, we’ve featured television pioneer Norman Lear, Santa Barbara Symphony Music Director Nir Kabaretti, and Ensemble Theatre Company Artistic Director Jonathan Fox. Steven’s talk should be particularly vibrant in that it takes us behind the scenes and is illustrated with footage of actual operas.”

Steven has served as General Director of Opera Santa Barbara since 2006. Prior to that he was an officer at the Pacific Pride Foundation / AIDS Project Central Coast, the Dream Foundation, and Camerata Pacifica. Steven has provided strategic planning and fundraising consulting for a variety of local organizations. A graduate of UC Irvine, he is also a spinning and yoga instructor.
