SANTA BARBARA, CA – What may sound like a simple little gig – judging the bands, dance and performance groups and entries of the 64th Annual Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade Presented by Consumer Fire Products – is actually not an easy task. With 93 entries to view with a critical eye, the Parade judges had their work cut out for them. Without further ado, here are the “Holiday Under the Sea” winners:
Best Dance Ensemble: La Boheme Professional Dance Group (runner-up: Dance Network)
Best School Cheer/Dance Team: Dos Pueblos High School Cheer (runner-up: Santa Barbara High School Cheerleading)
Best Performance Group: Direct Relief International
Most Spirited Entry: Adelante Charter School
Most Creative Use of Parade Theme: Santa Barbara Youth Music Academy
Best High School Band: Dos Pueblos HS (runner-up: San Marcos HS)
Best Junior High School Band: Goleta Valley JHS (runner-up: Santa Barbara JHS)
Best Elementary School Band: Goleta Union Elementary (runner-up: SBUSD Bravo Elementary)
Honorable Mention: Kenney Construction, Franklin Elementary School, Girl Scouts of California Central Coast; Santa Barbara Police Activities League (PAL)
“The competitiveness of the participants made this parade so much more creative and energetic,” said Parade Judge Genny Cummings (Indigo Interiors, 1321 State). Parade Judge Randy Weiss agrees, “With nearly 100 entries - it all added up to one of the best holiday Parades in recent years! And with so many talented and creative performances, the judges were challenged in determining the ultimate winners.”
The U.S. Marines proudly kicked off the night, with the Parade Prince (Kai Paterson) and Fairy (Alexandra Chadwick) lighting Community Christmas Tree in grand fashion. Crowd favorites Cody and Caleb Walker served as Co-Grand Marshals and even the crowds were brightly lit, with blinking necklaces, head gear and wands.
And then the spirited marching bands, cheer, sport and dance teams, many performance groups, decorative floats & balloons, and numerous community partner organizations enthusiastically flowed down State Street. The Parade was a crowd favorite from the beginning to end, with Santa himself waving from his reindeer float at the very end.
