Santa Barbara County Educators Honored at 4th Annual “A Salute to Teachers”

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Nov. 15, 2016 – With the glitz and glam of a Hollywood premiere, hundreds showed up to honor Santa Barbara’s exemplary teachers and mentors at the 4th annual A Salute to Teachers gala event held at the beautiful Lobero Theatre on Nov. 5. In collaboration with the Santa Barbara County Education Office, the sold-out event was hosted by local celebrity Andrew Firestone for the second straight year.

The following educators were recognized:

•Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year Michelle Minetti-Smith, Mary Buren Elementary

•Santa Barbara Bowl Performing Arts Teacher of the Year Brett Larsen, Adams Elementary School

•Distinguished New Educators: Megan Heffernan, Peabody Charter School; Manjot Singh, La Colina High School; Amy Porter, Carpinteria Family School

•Distinguished Mentors: Ashley Cornelius, Santa Barbara High School; Kevin Baldizon, Kermit McKenzie Junior High School; Terri Cox, Cuyama Valley High School

The following schools were recognized:

•Los Olivos, 2016 National Blue Ribbon School

•California Gold Ribbon School Awards: Ballard Elementary, Cold Spring, Santa Ynez, Hope, Monte Vista, Leonora Fillmore Elementary, Manzanita Public Charter, Franklin Elementary and Alvin Avenue.

The event also showcased some of Santa Barbara’s local talent and programs. Santa Maria High School Music Program, BOOM Chaka, and Spirit of Fiesta Alexis Simentales and Junior Spirit of Fiesta Sarah Naretto provided the evening’s entertainment, and San Marcos High School’s Café Royale served their delicious creations.
