The original Hitching Post was purchased by Frank and Natalie Ostini in Casmalia, California in 1952, specializing in “Santa Maria Style Barbeque,” a California ritual stemming from the culture of the Spanish Rancheros who cooked over the heat of a fragrant red oak wood-fire. Son Frank Ostini Jr. is the owner of The Hitching Post II, opened in Buellton, California in 1986. Ostini, renowned as both a nationally respected chef and winemaker, showcases the tradition of the highest quality Santa Maria Barbeque paired with the enjoyment of the region’s best Pinot Noir wines. The Hitching Post II became internationally recognized with the 2004 Academy Award-winning film Sideways and has earned praise for its food and wines for 30 years. Hitching Post Wines are available throughout the United States at a select group of retailers and fine dining restaurants. The Hitching Post II Restaurant and Winery has a devoted audience among both food and wine aficionados and has been favorably reviewed in Wine Spectator, Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Wine Enthusiast, and the New York Times.

Frank Ostini and Gray Hartley first made wine at home in 1979 and their first Pinot Noir in 1981. The project moved to a winery in 1986 to make wines exclusively for the Hitching Post ll Restaurant, also opened in 1986. With the 2008 harvest, Frank and Gray moved the winemaking to Terravant Winery, a new ultra-premium facility in Buellton, just 1.5 miles from the Hitching Post II. Their passionate focus has been to work with the California Central Coast’s best vineyards to produce many Pinot Noirs, a couple Syrahs and a Cabernet Franc blend. With a cool marine-influenced climate and unusually long growing season, many of these grapes make wines that drink well when young and have shown the ability to improve and age gracefully for many years.
