Santa Barbara City College may now add the description “award winning” to its newly modernized Humanities building on the east end of campus. SBCC and architects DLR Group will receive the Award of Excellence in the Modernization category by the Community College Facility Coalition (CCFC) for renovation/modernization of the 45,762 SF structure that houses classes in fine art, computer programming, and film and television production. The award will be presented November 15th at the CCFC’s 23rd Annual Conference/Professional Design Awards ceremony in Sacramento.
Construction on the Humanities Building Modernization project began in September 2012 and was completed in 2014 using funds from Measure V, the local bond measure for SBCC construction improvement that was passed on June 3, 2008. The bond provided a total of $77.2 million to the college, designated for upgrades to its deteriorating infrastructure and overall physical environment. The Humanities Building renovation/modernization featured a new entry structure that organized the building circulation patterns and entry points, as well as conference rooms and restrooms at every level. The project brought the building up to current building code and replaced aging and outdated instructional technology.
“The architects determined that the original concrete building, built in the 1970s, was in good condition and had great potential to be transformed into a high quality educational environment,” says Julie Hendricks, Senior Director of Facilities, Planning and Campus Development at SBCC. The Modernization award “acknowledges the building’s elegant streamlined architecture that emphasizes the linear quality of the building and uses subtly contrasting materials to highlight the lines and planes of the building,” says Hendricks.
The Design Awards’ Modernization Projects category was open to any registered California architect, construction/program manager or Community College District with projects completed between January 1, 2010 and June 1, 2016.
