Cuyama Groundwater Sustainability Agency Formation Workshop

The Counties of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Kern, and Ventura, and the Cuyama Community Services District will host a public workshop to discuss the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) and the possible formation of a Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA). The workshop will be held on October 27, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Cuyama Elementary School Cafeteria, 2300 Highway 166, Cuyama, CA 93254. The workshop will include presentations from the local agencies working to form the GSA, representatives of the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), and the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).

The purpose of SGMA is to provide for local, collaborative, and sustainable groundwater management. SGMA requires that eligible public agencies in all medium and high priority groundwater basins, including the Cuyama Valley Groundwater Basin, form new GSAs before June 30, 2017. The agencies looking to form the GSA, all of which overlie the Cuyama Valley Groundwater Basin, will host the workshop to ensure that the public and interested stakeholders understand the provisions of SGMA, understand what a GSA is, and how the formation and actions of a GSA may affect Cuyama Valley groundwater resources. The workshop also will be important for the agencies to receive public input on the GSA formation process.
