September 1, 2016 (Santa Barbara, CA) — TV Santa Barbara announced the recipients of the 2016 Media Access Awards. The awards celebrate local independent media and producers for building community dialogue and increasing diversity in our local media.

The Media Access Impact Award is presented to a program or producer working to have a positive impact on our community through media. “Las Noticias en Confianza” is receiving this award in recognition of their impact. This program series provides information and news in Spanish to our local community and is hosted and produced by Silvia and Enoc Uribe.

Fred Winter is the recipient of the 2016 Media Maker Award. This award recognizes Fred for his commitment and dedication of time and energy to community access television. Fred is a long-time volunteer of the organization and directs numerous programs including “Bob’s TV Show”, “Compassionate Connection”, and “Ernie Salomon Live”. Fred also produces the WIN Program’s Music Special each year.

The Media Access Partner Award is presented to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in recognition of their partnership with TV Santa Barbara and use of media to further their mission. The museum launched the “Naturally Different” program series this year as a way to highlight the work of the museum and educate the community.

Recognizing the work of an individual or an organization as a champion of local independent media, TV Santa Barbara presents the Media Access Champion Award to Cathy Murillo. Ms. Murillo has served on the TV Santa Barbara Board of Directors, worked as a local reporter, and is a former community producer.

Smarty Pants is receiving the Media Access Creative and Technical Excellence Award for their first episode of “Smarty Pants News”. This program takes a fun and creative approach to educate students about when to surf after a rain storm.

Voting is currently open for the Media Access Community Choice Award. Local community producers were able to submit an episode of their program to be voted on by the public. The program which receives the highest number of votes by the end of September will be presented with this award. People can vote for their choice (once per day) at http://communitychoice.tvsb.tv.
