Habitat for Humanity Hosts “Denim & Diamonds”, A Benefit event at Procore Technologies to support three new Habitat homes in Carpinteria

Santa Barbara, CA. September 2016 – On Saturday, October 22nd, Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County will host its first-ever Denim & Diamonds, a gala event to support the It All Starts At Home campaign for the Sawyer Avenue Affordable Homes development. The Sawyer Avenue Affordable Homes project is a 3-home development which will provide safe and affordable housing for 14 people, including 8 children.

Denim & Diamonds will be held on the lawn of the Procore Technologies, Inc. campus in Carpinteria. The lawn overlooks the gorgeous Carpinteria bluffs and Pacific Ocean. At the benefit on October 22nd guests will kick off the evening with a cocktail hour and enjoy the location’s sweeping views of the bluffs and out to the Channel Islands. Dinner and live music will follow in a tent on the lawn.

Guests attending Denim & Diamonds can partake in a live auction, where they will have the chance to collectively build a home for the Sawyer Avenue Homes project by bidding on individual elements of the homes. Guests will be able to bid on the front door, the foundation, windows, or other various parts of a home, with the end goal of raising the funds to build a complete Habitat house. This is a distinctive live auction benefitting the project directly and will offer attendees a unique experience to build a home collaboratively.

The Sawyer Avenue Affordable Homes project is part of a larger fundraising effort, the It All Starts At Home campaign, which will generate a comprehensive total of 1.5 million dollars to expand Habitat for Humanity’s mission to end sub-standard housing in our service area. The Sawyer Avenue Affordable Homes project is a 3-home development, consisting of 100% affordable low and very low income homes, which will include three 3-bedroom townhomes on Sawyer Avenue in downtown Carpintera

As evidenced in Santa Barbara County’s recent study titled “A Snapshot of Poverty in Santa Barbara County”, Santa Barbara County faces a critical need for housing opportunities for low-income families. Many low-income households in our service area spend more than 50% of their income on housing and due to this cost burden, families sacrifice other necessities such as healthcare, nutritional food, and transportation. With a less than 1% rental vacancy rate, many low-income families are forced to live in unconverted garages, illegal or unhealthy dwellings, or live multiple families to one apartment. Studies show that children who live in inadequate housing have lower educational attainment and a greater likelihood of being impoverished and unemployed as adults.

It All Starts At Homes is a communitywide campaign to expand Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County’s mission to end sub-standard housing in our communities. The campaign goals are to: build 3 new affordable homes on Sawyer Avenue in Carpinteria, repair five homes through the A Brush with Kindness home repair program in Carpinteria, engage volunteers to support Habitat’s efforts to end substandard housing, and provide education to future homeowners through the Homeownership Readiness Curriculum.

The Denim & Diamonds gala is open to the public. Tickets are $150 per person. For sponsorship details, tickets, or for additional information, please contact Alexandra Hamill at (805) 692-2226 or at Alexandra@sbhabitat.org.
