Los Padres Announces New Acting Forest Supervisor

GOLETA, CA, April 26, 2017… Los Padres National Forest officials today announced that Six Rivers National Forest Supervisor Merv George will serve as Acting Forest Supervisor for the next four months until a permanent forest supervisor is selected to replace Robert Baird, who was recently named Pacific Southwest Region Director of Fire & Aviation Management.

George is a native of Humboldt County and a lifelong resident of the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. He received his degree in Native American Studies from Humboldt State University in 1997 and spent more than 23 years in public service, including 15 years working with tribal governments throughout California. George served four years on the Hoopa Valley Tribal Council and two years as the Tribal Chairman.

George began his Forest Service career in 2008 as the Pacific Southwest Region’s Tribal Relations Program Manager. In 2011, he served as Acting Deputy Forest Supervisor on the Six Rivers National Forest before being named to that position permanently in January 2012. He acted as Lassen National Forest Supervisor for four months in 2014, and in August of that year was named Forest Supervisor on the Six Rivers National Forest.

George has extensive large fire management experience and is a qualified advanced agency administrator. Prior to joining the Forest Service, he served as the Executive Director of the California Indian Forest and Fire Management Council, and also served as the Administrator for the Klamath River Inter-Tribal Fish & Water Commission.

“I have complete confidence that Merv will do an excellent job working with our employees, local partners and cooperators,” Baird said. “His diverse background and experiences make Merv a perfect fit to lead the forest during this transition.”

The reporting date for George on the Los Padres is May 15.
