Deadlines Approach for Community to Join Summer Solstice, Celebrate Unity

The 2017 Solstice festival starts June 23 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Alameda Park. The 43rd annual Solstice Parade starts at noon at Cota and State streets and continues north to Micheltorena Street o to Alameda Park where the festival continues until 8 p.m. The festival continues June 25 at the park from noon to 6 p.m. Alameda Park.
This year’s theme is “Celebrating Unity” and the Solstice Celebration board, staff hope you’ll join us in getting involved!
The Solstice organization is calling for poster and T-shirt artists for the annual contest. Deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 24. A 1st Thursday reception and opportunity for the community to vote on their favorite artwork for 2017 posters and T-shirts will be from 5 to 8 p.m. March 2 at Voice Magazine, 23 E. Canon Perdido St. Submission details available online.
New this year, the Summer Solstice Celebration is accepting proposals for new collaborative programming ideas that would occur in 2017 and 2018. To be considered prior to this year’s festival, applicants must submit proposal by March 15. After that date, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis for 2017 and 2018 seasons.
“Our goal is to build new audiences through mutually beneficial partnerships with local organizations,” said Solstice Executive Director Robin Elander.

Festival vendor applications are also available for 2017. The festival attracts more than 80,000 people over the three-day weekend. Proceeds from the festival support the Community Arts Workshop where the community comes together to learn to build floats, create parade ensembles and take art classes and participate in bringing the parade to life.

Bands and performing groups are being sought for the Main Stage during the Solstice Festival at Alameda Park. “We are seeking groups that love Solstice and looking for exposure to new audiences in exchange for marketing and promotion,” Elander said. “We are also seeking proposals from area dance instructors to lead Solstice ensemble classes for four to six weeks prior to the Parade for 2017 and 2018,” Elander said. “Lastly, but also very importantly, we are seeking financial and in-kind sponsors Solstice Parade, workshop and festival,” Elander said. “We rely on grants and sponsorships to make the event possible. Many opportunities exist for great exposure for your organization.”
