Santa Barbara, CA (March, 2017) – The CALM Auxiliary is pleased to announce the 31st Annual Celebrity Authors Luncheon, one of Santa Barbara’s most anticipated literary events, to benefit CALM’s vital programs across the county that help prevent child abuse, and treat children and families who have suffered from violence and abuse. The 31st Annual Celebrity Authors Luncheon will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Fess Parker Double Tree Resort
This year’s event will feature interviews and book signings by a variety of critically acclaimed authors, including Fannie Flagg, Dianne Dixon, Craig Johnson, and Kate McDermott, with Andrew Firestone serving once again as Master of Ceremonies. Hank Phillippi Ryan and Tom Weitzel return to the stage this year as interviewers. Susan Gulbransen, daughter of CALM’s founder Claire Miles, will also be on hand as a guest interviewer.
CALM Auxiliary members Becky Cohn and Carolyn Gillio are co-chairing the luncheon, and had this to share about the event, “The CALM Auxiliary is very proud to be hosting such a wonderful community event showcasing some incredible authors, all the while supporting CALM’s important cause. The entire Auxiliary has been behind this project from the start and we couldn’t do our job without every one of them. We feel fortunate to be involved and to help CALM in its mission to protect children and families from abuse.”
Fannie Flagg’s career started in the fifth grade when she wrote, directed, and starred in her first play, titled The Whoopee Girls, and she has not stopped since. At age nineteen she began writing and producing television specials, and later wrote for and appeared on Candid Camera. She then went on to distinguish herself as an actress and a writer in television, films, and the theater. She is the bestselling author of numerous novels. Flagg’s script for the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was nominated for an Academy Award and the Writers Guild of America Award and won the highly regarded Scripter Award for best screenplay of the year. Ms. Flagg is also the winner of the Harper Lee Prize. Her latest work is The Whole Town’s Talking. She lives happily in California and Alabama.
Dianne Dixon is a double Emmy nominee and winner of the prestigious Humanitas prize for outstanding accomplishment in writing for television. She was Visiting Professor of Creative Writing at Pitzer College in Claremont, California and has taught screenwriting at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media. The Other Sister is Dianne’s third novel. Her second novel The Book of Someday was a featured 2013 Buzz Book at the largest publishing trade fair in the US. Ms. Dixon’s debut novel The Language of Secrets was named a Top Ten New Fiction title by Amazon.
Craig Johnson is the New York Times Bestselling Author of the Walt Longmire Mystery Series, which are the basis for Longmire, the hit Netflix original drama, starring Robert Taylor, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Katee Sackoff. His latest Walt Longmire mystery is An Obvious Fact. His books have won multiple awards, and Spirit of Steamboat was selected as the inaugural One Book Wyoming. Craig is the author of many award-winning novels and has garnered popular and critical acclaim both in the United States and Europe. Johnson lives in Ucross, Wyoming, population twenty-five.
Kate McDermott is an award-winning self-taught home baker who has taught pie making to thousands across the United States and in Europe at her Art of the Pie Workshops and Pie Camps. Her first book, Art of the Pie, was awarded several prestigious awards as best in 2016. McDermott has been featured in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Huffington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Real Simple, Alaska Airlines Magazine, Bon Appétit, The Splendid Table, NPR and Oprah.com. She lives at Pie Cottage in Port Angeles, Washington with her sweet German Sheppard Gretapie.
