The Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC) celebrated the opening of the 2017 racing season on Sunday, March 5th, 2017. At the helm was Commodore William Guilfoyle, assisted by Vice Commodore John Koonz and Rear Commodore Scott Deardorff , who welcomed members and guests to the official opening of the yachting season. Visiting yacht club commodores from San Francisco to San Diego were in attendance to celebrate the 145th opening day of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club.
The ceremonies began at 8 am with a buffet breakfast, mimosas, and a coffee bar accompanied by music on the deck. The official program, introducing the 2017 SBYC Board, the salutation of visiting commodores, and the opening of the racing season, took place from 10 to 11 am with the traditional opening day cannon blast creating a breezeway thrugh the plastic wind barrier on the Yacht Club deck. After the ceremony, the Parade of Fleet, honoring 2017 Commodore Bill Guilfoyle, bobbed around on a white capped ocean in front of the Yacht Club immediately after the conclusion of the program. Members and guests joined the parade on spectator boats provided by the SBYC fleet. The final activity of the day was the Casper Opening Day Race which which began at 2 pm. Guests at the Yacht Club partied on after the race for the remainder of the day and evening.
Among the winners of the Casper Trophy were Laura Schlessinger in her boat ‘Warrior’, Chris Parker in ‘Venom’, and ron Boehm in ‘California Zepher’.
