Dia De Los Abuelos

The Latino Elder Outreach Network (LEON) celebrated National Grandparent’s Day at their fourth annual Dia De Los Abuelos celebration. The event took place on September 14th, 2017 at the Carrillo Recreation Center in Santa Barbara from 10am to 1pm where it welcomed upwards of 160 participants and volunteers from over 20 organizations. This event consisted of a delicious lunch prepared by CAC, live entertainment by Mariachi Las Olas and a proclamation presented by Mayor Helen Schneider naming September 14th as Dia De Los Abuelos. This celebration is intended to recognize Latino elders who live, work and raise families in our community. It is a way to acknowledge their presence and thank them for the knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

This event was made possible by the generous contributions of the City of Santa Barbara, the County of Santa Barbara, Easy Lift Transportation, Family Service Agency, Hospice of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County Adult and Aging Network, Senior Programs of Santa Barbara Fund, and The Berry Man, Inc. Along with the immeasurable time and effort of volunteers from over 30 organizations.

LEON is a collaborative group composed of many government and non-government organizations who meet monthly to coordinate efforts on behalf of Latino elders. Their goal is to encourage and empower the Latino community, and to educate the public about the needs of, and resources available to, Latino elders.
