Go Plastic Free this July!

Join over a million people worldwide who are choosing to be a part of Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is an initiative that started in Western Autralia in 2011 and has grown to millions of participants across more than 140 countries worldwide.

Through education and engagement we hope to encourage people to be more aware of their plastic use. Most single-use plastic, like to-go food containers, aren’t recyclable, so they end up in our landfill or the environment through littering. These types of flimsy plastic are typically food/water contaminated and cannot be recycled in our materials recovery facility. Even when these types of plastics can be recycled (like water bottles) there is still a large environmental cost through water, land, & energy use, as well as increased air pollution.

Simple behavior changes can greatly reduce the amount of single-use plastic we all use on a day-to-day basis. Here are some simple tips that you can do to reduce your impact:

• Fill a reusable water bottle instead of using bottled water.

• Skip the straw! Bring your reusable metal/bamboo/plastic straw or opt-out all together and drink from the cup.

• Bring reusable food containers for to-go and doggy bag storage. You can ask restuarants to serve “dine-in” and then transfer food to your own container.

• Choose loose fruit and vegetable products and use a reusable produce bag instead of thin plastic bags.

• Bring reusable shopping bags as well as reusable produce bags to the market.

• Bring a reusable iced or hot coffee mug instead of taking a plastic or plastic-lined paper hot cup (neither of these are allowed in our blue bin).

• Check the products you buy for microbeads and choose alternatives.

• Buy refillable cleaning products.

Reducing plastic for a month is a great way to start making these actions an everyday habit.
