Grants Available to Nonprofit Groups to Expand Local Immigrant Legal Defense and Assistance Services

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA — The Fund For Santa Barbara is announcing the availability of a number of grants for nonprofit organizations currently providing or seeking to expand immigrant legal defense services to immigrants in deportation proceeding, as well to expand immigrant legal counseling and assistance services. Grants are being made available beginning 9:00 AM, Friday, March 23rd, 2018 through the newly-established Santa Barbara Immigrant Legal Defense Fund, a field of interest fund housed at the Fund For Santa Barbara as part of a local philanthropic collaborative effort. Along with the Fund For Santa Barbara, contributing foundations include the Santa Barbara Foundation, Weingart Foundation, and the Bower Foundation.

Dramatic changes in immigration policy over the last year has resulted in a national increase in deportations and broad enforcement activity, including in the Santa Barbara County region, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “Immigrants, with or without legal documents, contribute greatly to our regional economy and are interwoven into the fabric of our community. They are our friends, neighbors, and working people that provide vital services throughout our region. This fund will support community groups working to ensure due process and legal defense for members of our community caught up in ICE detention and removal proceedings,” says Marcos Vargas, Executive Director of the Fund For Santa Barbara.

The purpose of the Immigrant Legal Defense Fund is to promote due process to immigrants residing in Santa Barbara County who are vulnerable to deportation by expanding access to 1.) legal services for immigrants who are arrested and detained by immigration officials, and subject to removal proceedings, and/or with a final order of removal, and 2.) reliable immigration legal services in prevention of detention, removal and fraud victimization.

Nonprofit groups interested in grant support to either expand the local provision of immigrant removal defense or to expand immigration legal counseling and assistance services, are encouraged to apply. Applications, funding guidelines, and key dates are available online at www.fundforsantabarbara.org/apply-for-a-grant and at the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria offices:
