I love going to 1st Thursdays! There's the social aspect to it, but whether you go with friends, or run into friends, or go alone, this is a great opportunity to see what local artists are up to. That includes musicians and other performance artists.
Pick up a 1st Thursday brochure at one of the galleries and you will see that the participating venues go beyond the standard art forums - restaurants are open (sometimes with a few nibbles for visitors), bookstores have works on display or sponsor some music, and the Contemporary Arts Forum usually has a program of events that could well provide a whole evening of entertainment.
I highly recommend attending these events.
