Santa Barbara City Hall will spend $85,000 erecting new, bolt-cutter-resistant, hard-to-climb eight-foot fence around a portion of Laguna Creek by Garden and Yanonali streets to keep nearby homeless campers and individuals from the labor line from pooping there. “You don’t need to do any DNA testing. It’s there. You can see it,” said creeks restoration manager Cameron Benson, who also said that human feces contain pathogens that pose a definite threat to human health.
Laguna Creek runs mostly underground from the Riviera, past the labor line, and into the lagoon where Mission Creek pours under State Street. There it sits, and according to nearby property owner Tony Romasanta, generating an odious stench. For the most part, this septic stew is constrained from flowing to the ocean by a sandy berm, but on occasion that berm is breached.
Benson said he hopes the new fencing will discourage people from using the creek as a latrine and encourage them to use the two portable toilets provided by city instead. Currently, City hall pays Service Master to clean the area twice a week.

Geez for $85k you'd think they could just put in a porta potty or something and leave out the whole fence thing..
Now they're just going to have to find somewhere else to poop, and it probably won't be inside.

Welsh has his facts wrong and loonpt is even more idiotic in his response.
Welsh is wrong because the fencing is funded by Measure B monies so is not funded by the good citizens of SB.
loonpt (which I assume stands for "Loon, Part Time") is even more stupid. There are already two porta potties on site which have not ameliorated the problem.
Hey, Loon, get your sh** (literally) together next time you respond with some asinine comment.

If these guys are in the labor line, how about giving them a job cleaning up after themselves instead of paying Service Master to do it? Or better yet - send the labor liners back to Mexico, then there is no problem.
And didn't the Council just sign on to giving homes to all the homeless? I don't understand the problem. Why are we providing latrines and building fences and providing janitorial services to accommodate what shouldn't be tolerated in the first place (as usual)? Why don't we serve them breakfast while we're at it?

Wow.
SezMe, yes, I'll be sure and do my due diligence and visit the location in question next time before posting a comment...I suppose your best idea is to tell them to hold it, or are you supporting the fascist fence building?
If there are already restrooms there for them, I wonder why they weren't they mentioned in the article?? I wonder why they aren't being used?
I hope more homeless people people come to Santa Barbara, if for no other reason, it seems to bother you two so much. I love how people want to be "tough" on homeless just so they can sweep the problem over to the next town.. Cause you know that's really effective.

Er... loonpt, it DOES mention the two portable toilets in the article. You may want to go back and read it again. And for the record, the "homeless" and the people that frequent the labor line are not one and the same. And not all of the labor line workers are here illegally either. Just as not all of the homeless poop in the creek. Sheesh! The racism and intolerance I read in the Indi posts whenever the homeless are brought up astounds and sickens me. I suppose all of the wealthy Germans, Italians, Irish, Jewish and English (etc.) people in my neighborhood who walk their dogs and are too inconsiderate and lazy to pick up their dog's poop (which then ends up in that same creek) should be deported too. While you people may not poop in the creek, I'm guessing you've left your "mark" on this town in some other negative fashion at one point or another. May he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I don't understand how a lagoon that stinks near Mission Street and State Street has anything to do with the pooping going on down in the creek near the labor line on Yanonali?

I am also trying to figure out where this "Mission Lagoon by State and Mission streets" might be and how that would relate to "Laguna Creek by Garden and Yanonali streets." And where is the "sandy berm"? (Shades of "grassy knoll.") Despite not knowing where this is occuring, it seems to me that usually erecting a barrier is less effective than encouraging alternative behavior. People find ways over , under, around and through fences and walls.

Not all Germans, Italians, Irish, Jewish and English are wealthy either crissy, so stop with the racial profiling.
Why is it that anyone who is opposed to illegal immigration is automatically labeled a racist and intolerant? It's so much fun to watch the predictable response. You make sense when you say that the "homeless" and the people that frequent the labor line are not one and the same. I submit to you that those opposed to illegal immigration and racists are not one in the same. True racism is a serious charge and you are diluting the meaning of it by throwing it around to apply to people who believe in law and order. Why are you so intolerant of those who believe in fair orderly legal immigration?
By the way, have you been to the labor line checking for green cards? Why are you acting like you know what you're talking about when you say the labor liners are not all here illegally? Can you prove that? I bet you can't prove it anymore than I can prove that they are. All I said was send them all to Mexico, if they don't have enough class to poop in a latrine, whether they are here legally or illegally. Why should we pay Service Master for this and build an $85,000 fence rather than clean up the source of the problem? Is that what you mean by tolerance? Shall we tolerate and accommodate any kind of action no matter how sick or criminal just to prove we are not "racist"?
