Is this Christmas or Dante's Inferno? Bridgehouse vs. Reality? As I sit here pondering the season, I wonder what sort of society our little town of Lompoc has become. The lack of real caring and understanding absolutely appalls me, and I hope that this is not a sign of our end days as a civilized rational society. How is it that a person who has made it their life's vocation to study and offer their time, energy and passion for the under privileged, abused, neglected and misunderstood of our world can be so vilified by our local movers and shakers and press?
Have we come so far from our Judeo-Christian values that when someone turns the other cheek after being publicly humiliated for trying to exercise their right of free speech and whistle blowing, that they get spit in their face when they offer a gift of huge proportions as a community olive branch? Beds are beds and when someone offers you the ability to double the amount of homeless people that your facility can keep out of the winter cold comfortably, you accept the gift gracefully and with true thankfulness. You do not injure and insult the community and the donors by a personal vendetta aimed at stopping the tax paying watch dogs from taking to closer a look at your facilities or books.
Sue Erlich's retaliatory response is the exact same one that she used when she uncovered the covert research being done in her little piece of the world, but now I think her paranoia is going to be justified—homeless people do not want to use her facilities. I wonder why? Where there is smoke there is fire, and if I were her I would be sure all of my dirty little scams and back room political moves were hidden away. I, for one, will be very closely watching her. I pray no one dies of exposure on her watch this winter. It might make her wonder if having a warm bed to rest in might have made all the difference. —Pamela Meadows

This is mean spirited and does not really make any point at all. What is the problem and why are we printing things that malign folks' names with no corrobarating evidence?? What is the actual issue this person is referencing that could be useful as a community conversation. What has happened to our values, as the writer asks, when we succumb to public maligning and name calling. Where is the mature dialouge on sincere differing perspectives on social issues in our community. The Independent should not print such accusatory letters that have no apparent basis.
