The problem at Hendry's Beach is not necessarily drinking, but rather that the Pit Crew (aka The Mesa Rats) has become a self-righteous, confrontational group of vigilantes who "manage" the beach in the absence of any governmental presence. In one instance that I observed, they confronted an RV resident in a wheelchair, whose dog had defecated on the beach. This turned into a half-hour session of shouting obscenities that extended to the outer parking lot. In a second instance, one of the gang confronted me in a threatening manner because my dogs barked at the ground squirrels. He was incensed because he had just finished feeding them, and my dog was disturbing nature.

The lifeguards have proved worthless in terms of protecting the public or reporting disturbances, as was showed during the above episodes. Deputized patrol and enforcement is the only solution as far as I am concerned. —Merle Betz

I personally believe that people have no place on the beach, as their body temperatures could raise the ambient temperature of the channel water, and thus accelerate the melting of the greenland ice shelf.
