A project that has slid into the review process without much public information or input is the proposed three-story building to replace the gas station at the Olive Mill and Coast Village Road intersection. If built, this would signal the end of the charming, mainly one-story “Lower Village” as we know it. It would set a precedent, opening up our street to other oversized projects. (If you think “canyonization” is bad downtown, imagine what it would be like here.) The fabulous mountain views at that corner would be obliterated; already serious parking and traffic problems would intensify. Only one entrance/exit is planned, on Olive Mill Road, compared with the four currently used. Water usage might increase as much as 500 percent.

Alternatives to this project: Leave the gas station or come up with a much smaller project. The best solution would be a small park, like the one at the corner of East Valley and San Ysidro roads (also a former gas station). Maybe someone would offer to buy the land for this purpose. Save Coast Village Road has been formed to oppose this development. We have the support of the Citizens Planning Association and many individual members of the Coast Village Business Association, Montecito Association, and the community. We encourage anyone interested to check our Web site: SaveCoastVillageRoad.com. Donations can be sent to Save Coast Village Road, P.O. Box 50001, S.B. 93150, and members of the public are encouraged to attend the Planning Commission meeting on March 13 at 1 p.m. at City Hall. —Jeff Farrell

    Jeff,

Thanks for the post...I will try and make others aware of this as well. I for one had not heard any of the latest developments on this corner for over a year now. I don't imagine most locals would like to see such development on such a small street as Coast Village.
