I am familiar with the University of Chicago having had a summer job after high school and lived on campus. I later attended the University of Chicago for summer school as an undergraduate. You do not get to be dumb and be there at the same time.
Some of the cynically based side swipe comments offered on this site are the antithesis of what places like the University of Chicago represent. Those who disparage effete intellectuals do so at their own risk since this is the type of place that earns the reputation for "higher education," and from which exciting changes emerge, such as Carl Rogers in psychotherapy.
The choice that voters have this fall, as with the last election, is the difference between dumb and intelligent, between simple and useless mantras (drill baby drill) and useful discussions about complex problems.
Conservative: Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.
Maybe that is why when I hear someone defining him- or herself as a "conservative" I think "constipation."

So sad that our home grown terrorists throw their lives away for so little. The attitudes of the international terrorists and these home grown varieties is rather, and blandly, the same. Domination.
Behind every savior is a tyrant, in every bully a coward, and within every control freak an abused and trembling child.

At the event Senator Boxer said that assuming her husband's name was a good choice given her history to take on others.
I agree. I offer the suggestion that her new nickname be: "Firecracker."
I have had enough of the rageaholic scare tactics of the sling wing of the Republican Party dominating the news. Time to send them home. (Where are the Robert Tafts, Everett Dirksens, Barry Goldwaters and Dwight Eisenhowers? Even William F. Buckley kicked out the John Birch Society. Civil conservatives.)
My choice is Senator Boxer for 6 more years.

So, if the court orders the work stopped, will the person who made the decision to start the work and which has to be covered up pay for the work or will the taxpayer?

My choice is Joyce.
I do not believe that Joyce Dudley would act dishonorably. For her to conspire against any one in the office would be to her disadvantage and I believe she knows that.
I am sorry she has to put up with other's speculative accusations. I believe she will take it like a trooper like she has before.
I am sorry for Josh Lynn that he has received such abrupt treatment. I think it could have been handled better without such loss of face for Mr. Lynn.
I think Ms. Bramsen has lost face for how she has handled it. To dismiss a long term employee, especially one in the public purview, in such a manner speaks ill of her administrative skills. Even worse is that she justifies it in technical terms. If the DA's office is the paragon of legal and ethical treatment, this incident bodes ill and shows no compassion where a friendly hand could have been extended even if termination was the goal. Mr. Lynn could have been offered the option to resign. Without knowing all the facts, if what we read is true, if I were Ms. Bramsen's boss, she is the boss, I would reprimand her.
I believe we need to get the gossip and innuendo out of the DA's office and off the front page.

What would happen if a group of white Americans, say 50 or so, went to Tijuana and stood on a street corner waving American flags, demanded equal treatment, civil rights, and demand the natives speak English?
Is not the current bigotry reaction, the Arizona law, yet just another sign post in the window like "Irish need not apply," blacks to the back of the bus, Jews are arrogant and greedy, gay bashing, women belong in front of a stove not behind a desk, and Japanese to the concentration camps?

It is not so much courage, as it is training. If you have to think, figure things out, during such situations, you are lost. It often leads to panic. If you react with the training that you were given, you just act.
The courage is signing up, whether as a soldier, a policeman, or a fireman. They are always, constantly training. This and equipment is what makes the difference between an effective unit and a prescription for failure. This is the reason that the US forces are so successful in their endeavors. Will power and the screaming emotion you see on tv is exactly what you do not want.
