So, what was _actually_ getting into the creek, Ms. Bratburd? Could you please do some more infestigative reporting? I'd really like to know that before spewing vitriol at Ralph's.

From the description, it sounds like stagnant water in the storm drains (which can get very "putrid" indeed) rather than raw sewage or wastes from Ralph's clandestine oil refinery.

Anybody care to comment on the Paradiso development?

Two obscene gigantic houses will occupy the old ARCO property west of the Elwood Pier.

At least there will be a parking lot, beach access, and a coastal trail easement alongside the railroad.

For what it's worth: I have a copy of USGS Bulletin 324, "The San Francisco earthquake and fire of April 18, 1906, and their effects on structures and structural materials", published in 1907.

Photographs in the report clearly show vertical support I-beams that had begun to collapse _vertically_ from the heat of the fires, Here's a link to one:

For some reason, the USGS doesn't include this photo in their image library. But, it's worth pointing out that the text of the report mentions damaged insulation as a contributing factor in this type of failure.

The "woods" do indeed belong to everyone, but that doesn't mean you can do whatever you want out there. I am looking at the photo that starts this article - did someone think the trail needed a passing lane? I see nothing but probable erosion.

Bird: Alas, in these times, there's no money for "bus police", cameras. or anything else.

But, what were the other passengers doing? Couldn't they all have spoken up and shamed that "witch-with-a-b" into doing the right thing? Couldn't they have intervened on Birds behalf?

As the saying goes, all that's necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.

loonpt wrote " to suggest that cannabis leads to an unhealthy diet and heart conditions is absolutely ludicrous. "

Check your sarcasm detector, loonpt, I think it needs calibration.

And to Spacey: the sinsemilla growing technique did not come along until the late '70's, at least where I lived at the time. Prior to that, most weed was on the order of 1/10 to 1/5 as potent. And in the '80's, I gradually went from daily user to abstainer with no problem at all .

The problem with health care in the USA is that the financial part of the system is driven by a concern for profit, not patients. But, nationalized health care would involve the usual stupidity of an enormous bureaucracy.

What might work is to give up the concept of profit and wealth as ruling virtues in our culture, and move toward thrift and charity.

At which point pigs will fly.

Nothing built near the seashore can be permanent. It'll either be washed into the ocean or be left high and dry, sooner or later, Goleta Beach or Bacara Resort or New Orleans.
