To be clear, written public comments on the Miramar project can be submitted to the Montecito PC for the Aug. 6 hearing until noon tomorrow (Friday).
Both opponents and proponents have been encouraging their supporters to write the county's planning and development department and Montecito Planning Commission.

A quick clarification: The four charged defendants appeared in court Monday, but their arraignments were continued. Roldan is expected back in court today (Wednesday). Thanks.

A clarification: The editing process goofed what I had originally written, which is that Measure A would only be a continuation of the Measure D 0.5-percent sales tax. There would be no increase.

Actually sa1, that's a good question, and I erred in my reporting of the stances of two of the candidates.
Steve Pappas and Dr. David Bearman have both said the county should challenge the housing mandates, recommending the county team up with other discontented counties to file suit.
I apologize for the error.
As for Nava, those are great questions that should be asked and haven't been.

Update: Doreen Farr's campaign forwarded me Farr's e-mail response to the radio station, explaining her reasoning for not participating. Here is the content of that e-mail, sent four days after the invitation was sent out in February:
Thank you for your invitation but I must respectfully decline to participate in this debate. I don't think the public is well served by debates in which the moderator has already endorsed or expressed extreme bias or disrespect toward one or more of the
candidates, as has Mr. Caldwell.

Correction: Salud CarbajaI was mobilized DURING the last two years of his military service known as the Inactive Ready Reserves (IRR) for Operation Desert Storm. The period he was mobilized for Operation Desert Storm was not for the entire two years, but more like 30 to 40 days.
I apologize for the error. I misinterpreted and misread the information provided me.

Before too many people respond to this point about the mention of Nelson's race, I want to explain why this was included as part of the story. The facts are that Nelson is black and none of the jury is. Attorneys in Santa Barbara in the past have filed motions—and won—challenging the Superior Court jury system and the lack of diversity on a jury.
The race of the jury and the race of the defendant should have been lumped together in the story rather than separated. If the defendant was white and the jury was composed of all non-white members, this would've been significant and included as well.

You're right First District Streetfighter. The headline has been changed. Sorry about that.

Correction: The meetings canceled by the News-Press because Steepleton had pneumonia were scheduled to occur in January, not December as reported.

The next Montecito Planning Commission meeting is actually not August 27, but August 28. The above story has been changed to reflect the correct date.
