Why should this be a surprise? Courts are notorious for failing to punish driving behavior that results in a fatality. Even calling such incidents an "accident" builds in a notion that nobody was at fault. Just look at the Jake Boysel case. Driver with history of reckless driving behavior plows into a boy legally riding in a bike lane and kills him. The maximum he could have even been sentenced to is a year, and that's assuming he was convicted.
The only thing to learn from all of this is that if someone kills you due to their own "negligence" they'd better be using a gun because if they're driving a vehicle they're going to get off scott free.

So much for double jeopardy. Prosecution had two shots at this guy and couldn't get the job done. Are they going to keep trying him til he's bankrupt and can only afford a public defender?

Funny how they manage to put half the police force to work to squash Floatopia but the minute a bunch of pseudo celebrities infest the area it's hands off law enforcement.

Rather than strip searching 4 year olds and forcing people with medical conditions to remove false breasts and catheters we should focus on the real dangers such as cell phone drivers (with and without headsets) that are as dangerous as drunks on the roads. I guarantee you they've killed more people in the last ten years than domestic terrorist attacks.

I love how in all of the coverage of this so far, they neglect to mention that Maria Vargas is a UCSB student. I supposed that makes it easier to just write the whole thing off as some random act of gang violence.
