loonptNot illegal to sit in the US and speak of a country you know nothing about...just silly. You're welcome by the way...Bribe? Never once as a recruiter did I ever offer a bribe...not even a friggin bonus. How could this happen? I offered people the truth about a purposeful life where hard work is rewarded in a disciplined meritocracy. I can give you numerous contacts in the SB service community (Police, Fire Dept, etc) that chose to enlist during my watch and are better human beings as a result. There is nothing compartmentalized about what I do. At the high end of the tactical spectrum, everything we do here...today and everyday, has strategic implications. Another area you know nothing about
John Teiber: You have no idea how many Afghans are killed by their home grown Taliban in daily unprovoked attacks on thier own women and children in the name their bastardized beliefs. You have no idea how many young Afghan boys my men have seen after getting raped by thier village elders simply for sport. One constant remains: the ethical warrior who is the antithesis of what you describe who is there to pick up the pieces and strives daily to bring about security, peace and prosperity. Just came to me: Not once has a US Marine laid an IED in this country. Since you have the answers, go down the road to Wounded Warrior Battalion and see some of my brothers with missing limbs and tell them they violated international law in person.
On Military Recruiters Targeted

I find this story and responses awesome. Having been a Marine on recruiting duty in Santa Barbara (95-98) and now currently in Afghanistan, I love the armchair quarterbacking by all. A little perspective...a good recruiter will get names and phone numbers of every single HS Senior and contact as many of them as humanly possible before and after they (hopefully) graduate. Contact...NOT perform magic/voodoo/Jedi Mind trick. Restricting access is silly (note to Marine in office on Upper State: Keep up the good work brother!)...pontificating about what the military is or is not doing in Afghanistan while sitting in a home in one of the most exclusive/expensive communities in the world is even sillier.

Ken_Volok: Repsonse to your questions.
1 - Of course. I support and defend the constitution.
2 - Not my place to determine how we Marines are used.
Content of the piece is not the issue for me...I just don't like the title.
Marine 0369, weren't you fighting for the First Amendment guarantee of Free Speech?Or was the whole Iraq War just a bastardized use of our armed forces?

Nick: Your all-volunteer force of American Marines who willingly, honorably served in Iraq say a collective "you're welcome" for your bastardized use of our motto as the title for this piece.Very clever, Civilian.

"If you travel the freeways at night in southern California, or watch the train tracks carefully, you will notice plenty of Army convoys, military devices stacked on flatcars, and all the industrial paraphernalia of war trundling along."
The above statement calls into question the credibility of the entire piece. Additionally, your solution ("We can start demilitarizing our society...We can demand a constitutional inquiry...") compels one to do little more than dream and pray it all away. Lots of words from other published men and selective statistics with no real action.
On The Militarization of America

Ken: What planet do you live on? Right now at this moment there is a dude beating his kid in some far off land who will grow up to be a bad person with bad intentions and, coupled with a high IQ, will invent a better way to dispatch those that disagree in horrific ways. Something tells me that there will continue to be brave men and women (with nothing but love in their hearts...) of your US Military who will voluntarily deploy to said far off land prepared to do violence on your behalf for a just cause to make peace out of chaos. That, Mr. Cohen, is the real world...

dou4now: Marine Corps not 'Corp', homie.
Feels good to occasionally drop by my hometown paper to see the latest Military HateSpeak.
Binky: Thanks for informing us all of Mesa's first duty.

spacey,America (good) as you know it is, in large part, due to war.
War employs more people than you know... It's pretty good business.
As a force we generally suck at a pure defense on a tactical level.

Mr. Turjoman,You see little evidence from your computer in Goleta? Have you seen the actual evidence with your own eyes in Marjah today? Nawa? I take it you've done partnered patrols with ANSF with support of numerous NGO's with extremely positive results over a 9 month deployment?
billclausen,"we" continue being sucked into what? You haven't been sucked into anything. "We" to me is the dudes to my left and right doing the nation's business in AFG and are doing it quite well.
doug4now,NEVER win? Thanks for the vote of confidence homie. If you don't mind I'll stick to the idea that We (see above) are going to leave AFG much better than we found it.

No one has mentioned how friggin H-O-T the Mayor is. I saw her in person this last Saturday and was Star Struck. Anyone know if she's single? I wonder if she'd consider a date with a distinguished older (I'm only a year older...)active duty Marine. Helene: If you are reading this, send me an e-mail...I'd love to take you out for coffee.
