Like other Goletans, I associate Aceves with a full-steam-ahead development agenda. He's been pro-growth-at-any-cost and I don't believe he has done a good job at protecting the interests of the city or its residents.

Unions serve a purpose in protecting workers' rights. The entire New-Press debacle clearly illustrates the importance of a union. Without one, the management there would run all over its employees with total disregard of their rights.

Darn right, NOT IN MY BACKYARD! You can have it in your backyard if you wish, but I don't see why you would.

It's time for Goleta to put the breaks on such out-of-control development. Enough is enough! The intersection at Storke and Hollister is already suffocating from traffic congestion. Things will only get worse.

As for the other commenters that blame "liberals" and "progressives", I can only imagine that this is a reflexive conservative reaction to blame the other side for anything they don't like. There's nothing "liberal" or "progressive" about unrestrained development.

Something is missing from this article. Jalama Beach already has seven cabins that it rents out at these rates (which, by the way, are hardly "affordable"). In any case, how in the world is this connected to the Miramar Hotel, more than 65 miles away?

Sorry, snugspout, but if you were at the townhall forum, then you would know that there is a NEW, 3-tiered insurance option being offered to UC employees. ONE of these tiers (Tier 1) will not offer Sansum-Cottage as a preferred provider. The other two tiers allow access to Sansum-Cottage. And of course, HealthNet HMO will continue to offer access to Sansum-Cottage. I challenge the accuracy of your statement that "Sansum and Cottage are dropping UCSB".

snugspout, it is absolutely NOT true that "Sansum and Cottage are dropping UCSB". They both accept HealthNet, which is one of the HMO insurance options available to UCSB employees.

Are you trying to make the argument that people are not riding the bus, willy? Whether or not they read the Independent or participate in its surveys, people ARE riding the bus, now more than ever. Just because you don't, does that mean that the services should be cut?

On MTD bus routes are being eliminated unless the feds release funds. Will you miss one of them?

It's difficult to see how anyone would have a problem with this bill, which simply closes a loophole and makes the crime of rape comparable whether or not the victim is married. It just makes sense.

I hope they enforce these rules for all automobile drivers, all the time. They act like they own the road.
