People complain about taxes but don't seem to mind more development that will never pay its way.
Meanwhile, we have SO MANY other opportunities for recreation here. See http://www.independent.com/news/2009/jun...
Making and maintaining ice in S. Cal is kind of an oxymoron, with emphasis on the last two syllables.

The meetings take place at 6 PM at Goleta City Hall: 130 Cremona Drive, Suite B, Goleta, California 93117. You go around to the BACK of the building to the entrance to the Council Chambers where the Planning Commission meets.
As the article indicates, the next meeting is on Monday, August 24, 2009.

Excellent story combining business new with the human interest element. I really appreciate a good, in depth story on something happening LOCALLY.
Another great piece of writing by M. Sadler. Thanks.

To all you folks claiming that this is the housing we need, please be reminded that these units will be selling for an average of $1 million or more, needing a household income of over $250,000 to buy one.
So really, this will NOT be housing for most Goletans, but instead for rich people coming in here. The firefighters in the new firehouse, even if they have a spouse making over $100,000, probably won't be able to live in one of these units.

I think the project managers are paying Davies propaganda firm a lot of money to perpetuate the notion that this housing is for people who live in Goleta. In fact, virtually all of these units will sell for over a million dollars, well out of reach of Goleta households. Even a 2 income household would have to earn about $250,000 every year to afford that kind of mortgage.
Why destroy Goleta's General Plan so we can provide housing for people who don't live here?
Why create more housing that the firefighters in the new, adjoining fires station won't be able to afford - so they will fill our roads commuting from Oxnard and Lompoc?
Most of the buyers for these units will be wealthy people from outside Goleta and probably outside the South Coast. Bringing more people to the South Coast means they will require services - gardeners, teachers, nurses, etc. and that is growth inducing. So instead of preventing sprawl, this project will promote sprawl because these people will not be able to afford these units and be forced to commute.
Let's try to do better.

While Pappas' sanity may be open to debate, his lack of integrity is clear. When the trial started, Pappas was quoted as saying that he just wanted his day in court. He was quoted in his hometown paper, the Santa Ynez Journal (Jany 22, 2009), as follows:
"Something didn't sit right and Ive got to show the public what it is," Pappas said. "And when the judge makes his decision, he makes his decision, and Ill be done."
But now instead of accepting Judge's opinion as he said he would, Pappas is appealing. Breaking promises is just another demonstration of why Pappas is unfit to be supervisor.
As one wag recently said, "By continuing to harass Farr in the courts after a judge ruled so strongly against him, Pappas has demonstrated that he isn't just a sore loser - he's a festering sore loser."

Holly,
Did you ever think that people who ride bikes are essentially giving you more road and bike space for your car? Did you ever think that bike riders save you money by not competing with you for gas and oil? Did you ever think bike riders help by not polluting air?
And since you are concerned about bike riders breaking laws, do you ever see in the paper where someone is ticketed for driving a car too fast or driving drunk? How many people have been killed by a runaway bike as opposed to a runaway car? Perhaps cars are bigger threats than bikes when it comes to law breaking and maiming.
Holly, no one is bitching about your car, just asking for a little help in using bikes to get around. Have a nice day!

Chancellor Yang has shown great respect for the community. We hope he doesn't let the bureaucrats go ahead with a plan that is so unsustainable.
Instead, we hope he challenges the entire UCSB braintrust, led by The Bren School, to adopt the latest techniques and methods already in use by other leading universities to make UCSB a model of sustainability. That would win UCSB more press, accolades and funding than another Nobel prize.

John Locke,
Perhaps I can refresh your memory about Bush/Rove's manipulation of the media:
1. He had a person planted on the newsgroup covering the White House, a person who lobbed softball questions.
2. He created falsely positive "news" such as flying onto an aircraft carrier backed by a huge "Mission Accomplished" banner.
3. He had aids rewrite reports on global warming before they were distributed to the press.
4. He held enormous rallies that seemed to be public but which in fact were people who all had been screened as being supporters.
5. He had his own people create analysis of the Iraq situation that, CONTRARY to what the intelligence agencies had concluded, concluded that there were WMDs in Iraq. Then he had poor Colin Powell present the false evidence publicly, "evidence" that was later repudiated.
These are only some examples of Bush's manipulation of the press, leaving out the independent work by FOX so-called news.
Obama would have to go a long, long way to match what Bush did to manipulate the media for 8 LONG years.
