"The main reason so much oil escaped was due to delays by the government of 18 hours to come to the scene to advise the line owners." What? The pipeline owners didn't know what to do without the Feds coming in to tell them? You made a nice try to shift the blame from the owners to the government, only your sleight-of-hand doesn't quite work.

Way to go Lois! I, for one, am sorry to see that you will be retiring after this term.

Curious that you used the word "polis", in that the mystery writer Ross Macdonald (AKA Ken Millar) who moved to Santa Barbara in 1946 made a similar comparison in the '70s. He said that SB was just the right size for a polis and compared it to ancient Athens. I'm not certain what he'd have to say about 21st-century Santa Barbara.

Congratulations to Mr. Kuznia!

And JarJar, this isn't a seven-year old story, it's a story that's been going on for at least seven years, and will go on until Wendy finally tires of her vanity press and sells the SBNP to someone who has an interest in journalistic integrity.

Wow. I sit in stunned admiration of JarJar's industry. Twenty-eight comments on this story, and eleven of them are his. Of course, mentioning a Democratic politician to him is like waving the red flag in front of a bull.

@realitycheck: It's curious how my shopping experience at the Granada bookstore differed so greatly from yours. I find the young clerks (the so-called slackers) to be most pleasant and helpful. Perhaps if you are as pleasant in person as you are in these threads, the booksellers were only too glad to see your backside exiting from the store.

I figure calls to drop N-P subscriptions are a waste of time. Most of us who would do this have already done so a number of years ago.

@ random_kook, you absolutely nailed it! I remember the outcry when the Independent dropped Tom Tomorrow for a couple of issues and carried cartoons by Mr. Cagle.
