I haven't drawn any conclusions or taken any sides on this. But I'd like to ask some innocent questions, just to explore some other angles ...
Does the landlord bear any responsibility here? Is she supposed to be aware of the zoning for her property and allow only uses which are consistent with that zoning? And who's responsibility is it to make sure there are no fire/safety/electrical/etc violations? And who is responsible for keeping up the property so it doesn't become "dilapidated"?
Don't get me wrong, I'm sympathetic towards those being evicted. It just seems the article didn't delve much into the landlord's role & responsibilities.
Finally, a devil's advocate might ask what would have happened if a fire started from one of those illegal electrical circuits, burned the entire building down, and killed someone? Who would people be shouting at then?
