Number 1, just like anything else people can abuse the system. We need to design the system for those who use it legally, not the minority who abuse it.

It's like saying that because some underage kids abuse alcohol, that all liquor stores should be shut down. Or if someone gets their hands on prescription drugs that are not for them - we're not going to close down all the pharmacies are we? Of course not, we're going to design them to work for the majority of people who use it as they should.

The statistics clearly show that since California passed prop 215 that underage people using illegally Marijuana has gone down. Funny, as the feds report that arrests for Marijuana have gone up.

I think if nothing else, that clearly shows the reality of the way it is, not the reality the feds want to make us believe.

Soon Bush will be out and his hard core style of law enforcement will be out as well. Hopefully whoever is elected next will believe in those silly things called facts, science and statistics.

I'm a proud supporter of Hortipharm and it'll be a sad day when they are forced to closed down.

On Shakedown From Feds Imperils Medicinal Marijuana

If we're going to go about this the right way, and make this legal, everyone has to do their part - including club owners. Come on club owners, SB is trying to work with you to make everything as legit as can be, but it can't work if you don't work with them.

We all need to work together locally to make this legal and accepted in our community. Not filing, or doing it incorrectly, not working with the city officials and everything else is just no way to run a legit business. I'd much rather give my money to clubs that have done things the right way and are helping move the medical movement mainstream.

And I hope the meeting with the feds goes well. I can't imagine the DEA rolling into SB and shutting down clubs. Imagine the news story that would be, not to mention the black eye it would give our wonderful city.

On Santa Barbara’s Medical Marijuana Update

There are 42 cab companies in town - and they are adding more.

On top of that, City Hall doesn't regulate them.

Add to that there are stories galore of cabbies taking "advantage" of drunk and passed out girls, and SB needs to take a serious look at their Taxi problems.

I know they want to cater to the tourist, but where does it end and public safety begin?

But we all know Marijuana is really the #1 crop in Santa Barbara county and the state for that matter. It equals more then the top 10 crops combined.

On Regulation, Not Repression

Amen, keep on these guys and keep up posted when events like this happen!

Does anyone on the city counsel have any guts to make a call on this topic? Someone has to make a call, and then go with it otherwise we'll continue to get tramped by the feds at their whim.

The Poets have done more for fighting for medical dispensaries and patients rights in SB then anyone else has. I'm glad Heather and her family were vindicated!

People abuse everything, from Rx they get legally (hello Rush Limbaugh) to booze (DUI for Pres Bush). Because 5% of the people do cause 95% of the problems, don't simply rush to put everyone into that "farce" category. Hey, I'm sure I can go to my local doctor, fake some kind of ailment and leave with an Rx for whatever I wanted - so what's the difference? If people are going to be dishonest and lie, well that's another issue - it's not Measure P, Prop 215 or the clubs fault.

I moved into a new place in Goleta and the last person who lived there got the News Press. I've been trying to get them to stop delivering it to me, but they won't. I can't cancel it. I've tried several times.

It's been a year now and I'm to the point where I'm hoping the subscription just runs out...

It's obvious that Alexander has an uneducated view of the situation, but he does knows what he sees around him. I can relate to his plight. Personally I am mad about the noise from the airport, and I'd be mad about people up at all hours of the night keeping me up to. But thankfully we have alternatives, as adults, besides calling the cops to complain.

If you don't like what your neighbor is doing, just go talk to him. If he's growing for medical purpose and is on the up and up, he is going to want to hear your concerns and work out the problems you have with him. He's not a "criminal" nor is he "hiding" behind medical laws. That's like saying someone who owns a gun is "hiding" behind the second amendment. The reason he has to be secretive is because the harsh hand of the DEA. I'm sure he would rather have a real quality grow facility somewhere other then his home, but until the DEA stop doing what they are doing, he's stuck "hiding" in his house.

What the DEA is doing is ILLEGAL. Period. What is happening now is an abuse of power, just as what people were afraid the government would do with the Patriot Act. They are now using laws put in place to break up organized global crime syndicates back in the 80's to go after mom and pop landlords who have done nothing wrong.

Ya, the noise around your place isn't right, but neither is this. And I think we were all brought up knowing that 2 wrongs never make a right.
