"By private medical situation, do they mean a stabbing?"

That would be the obvious conclusion... and it is not a "private medical situation" when it literally spills out all over our streets.

"Blaming him for driving a car is ridiculous"???

Seriously? That might be a valid point if the driver of the car was just driving down the road, minding his own business, and some coked up drunk chick leaped out in front of his car in the dark and got killed.

But that's NOT at all what happened here. I'll recap the facts for you:

The driver of the car and his friends decided to party their brains out.
They then all decided it was somehow a great idea to go car surfing over the bumps, which they do several times at ~40mph.
They do it one last fateful time, this time the driver almost doubles the speed. Result: Death and destruction.

Were the girls idiots for making the choices they did? Of course.

But the driver... you want to give the driver a pass? That's insane. The driver made the choice to drive while wasted. The driver also made the choice not only to allow such stupidity, he participated in it. It could also easily be argued that his decision to make the last run at 70+mph was the direct cause of the fatal result.

No. The driver was admittedly plastered. Without his participation, the whole stupid thing would not have even been possible. He made several bad decisions.

That is why he is gets 14yrs, He is responsible.

"oh, but she was stupid... she shouldn't have done it.. .she.. .she...etc."

Yes, and "She", Alison Meadows was already punished.
She's DEAD.

The girl already was given the death sentence. She's dead. She paid for her part, with her life. You do understand that, right?

The driver pays with 14yrs. Please explain how his responsibility as the driver does not warrant this?

Good Grief!
Seems so many posters are so stuck on "hating those evil 'Montecito' people" that they can't see the forest through the trees.

The problem having to be dealt with now is not the fault of Montecito, it is Caltrans' own creation... and they created a complete clusterf*ck.

Sure, the people of Montecito are bitching about it, but rightfully so. Should any of you find yourselves at the Southern end of Cabrillo wanting to go South on the 101, you'll feel it too. See, back when Caltrans first did the "widening" project from Hot Springs towards the North, combined with the 3 lanes all the way to Olive Mill Southbound... they completely neglected to tell anyone about a "small detail" until the project was already done. i.e. that the Southbound on ramp "temporary" closure was actually permanent.

Now, for all you folks that think this isn't a big deal because you don't live in 'cito, guess again. See, the traffic now has to ALL go down Coast Village Road and enter the freeway at Olive Mill. You need to experience that mess to truly get a feel for how bad that is. Sure, the business owners in Montecito are pissed (rightfully so) but the people having to traverse that route are equally inconvenienced, as the majority of them never wanted to be in Montecito in the first place.. .they just wanted to drive past East Beach and hop onto the freeway. Cabrillo backs up all the way to the volleyball courts in the Summer for this exact reason.

You don't like pollution? Great, neither do I. I also know that a moving car generates a hell of a lot less of it per mile than one that is stuck in gridlock.

Are there other issues that Caltrans needs to address in this ever maddening project? Sure, of course there is. Why not be proactive and speak up about those and stop whining about "those nasty rich people in 'cito" wanting their on ramp back?

This shouldn't even be looked at until that Youth Hostel is completed. Most folks don't seem to remember that the Youth Hostel was already a condition to the original Red Lion getting built... then it somehow was used as a carrot to build on this parcel... yet still, nothing.

Those that can recall when we all actually voted to allow the original hotel to be built will also remember the promise that they would not try to build any more hotels if we allowed that one.

I'm sick of broken promises.

How does this make any sense at all?
"Since 2008, there have been 14 pedestrian-related accidents at that intersection, 10 of which involved people turning onto Carrillo during a red light and typically occurring when people were walking across Carrillo."

If the light is red, they have no business walking across Carrillo.

So, basically, the reasoning is we should impede normally legal traffic flow so people can be safe while illegally ignoring a red light to cross the street?

...and why was the article about the man that the SBPD actually beat to death (he later died at the jail) set up to have no comments/discussion?

"Aggressive Panhandling"?
Wielding a weapon and demanding "Give me your F***ing money" Sounds like Armed Robbery to me.

Why such a ridiculously lesser charge? If he were not "homeless", would he have been properly charged?

Next, we'll hear of a homeless guy that robs a bank at gunpoint being charged with an "unauthorized overdraft"

Maybe the cops are too busy beating up (and sometimes killing) other citizens over seemingly lesser crimes?

what we were told when voting on the lottery was that all of the revenue would go to the schools - in addition to what was already funded by the State general fund already earmarked for the schools.

What ended up happening is all the lottery money was put into the general fund and the schools ended up net zero for an increase in funding.

This is what happens with most of these "save the schools" propositions, it is all a shell game - and Jerry is the king of that game.
