If I remember correctly, it was indicated on Edhat that the Botanic Gardens' server was down, and its telephone lines with it, which might explain why the phone calls have not been returned.

These two really are a wonderful couple -- and truly wonderful individuals as well. I've known Carla since high school and met Lance through her, and it's been amazing to watch people come together to support them in such a dire situation.

If this country were to follow separation of church and state strictly, then the ideal situation would be to have only civil unions as recognised by the government, and marriage be strictly a socio-religious construct, wholly unrelated to the government. "Marriage" is such a buzzword that it inevitably gets people -- both pro and anti -- up in arms about the subject. Unfortunately, it's not an idealised system, and so the conflict's going to persist.

Independent staff: if possible, I expect it'd be tremendously helpful to evacuees to know which of these places will take pets. Don't know if you have that information, but just a suggestion.
