My experience (49 yrs in SB) there are 2 kinds of rentals here, ones that are rented to people that know each other, either through family or life, these are generally nice places that are well maintained and are affordable, tenants seem to care for their homes as if they were their own (I was one for many years) landlords were very responsive and I did not find them greedy, I rented what I could afford, sorry I can't fuel the fire.

Then there are the rentals that you find advertised or from certain property management companies that are sub standard overpriced etc.

Guess its really the same everywhere, networking, working hard and taking part in the community will get you far
