A waste of money in my opinion. If the person wants to commit suicide he/she will find another way to do it. Would have been better to take the money spent on the barrier and use it for mental health care for people who can't afford it.

That would be a really bad idea to shut down Diablo Canyon. Whom ever came up with that idea needs to get real.

This is excellent news. Now Wendy McCall has to pay and pay dearly for her unfair labor practices.

Without question we need to be developing green energies. I live in Nevada (after nearly 40 years of living in Santa Barbara and Goleta) and Sen. Harry Reid is working hard to make sure we have them. However, until we get there, we need to pursue oil drilling and at the same time reducing our reliance on Middle East oil & gas. Yes, drill for oil in the Santa Barbara Channel, Alaska, Gulf of Mexico etc. I was disappointed that Schwarzenegger terminated the Tranquillon Ridge Project. As a consumer, I want relatively inexpensive gas to power my car. I will not have that if environmentalists continue to put of road blocks on oil & gas development projects. I can't see oil production ever going away completely, because we use it other products; plastics for example. So oil companies, drill away with my blessings. However, at some point we won't need you for energy production because we will have cleaner energies from which to obtain our power.

I agree that its a waste of money. Better to spend the money on mental health services that would go a long way to prevent suicides.

I say keep drilling off the California Coast. Certainly continue in the Santa Barbara Channel. However, at the same time we need to be developing green energies (solar, wind, geothermal etc) and nuclear (not "green" but certainly clean!). At some point totally get off oil, gas, and coal as are primary fuel sources, but not until we have developed the "green" fuels as reliable resources. We can never totally wean ourselves of oil because oil is used is so many products. Plastic for example.
I'm writing this from Gillette, WY which bills itself as "The Energy Capital of the Nation." There are open coal mines everywhere! I don't think the good people here would be very happy with what I just wrote about trading coal for "green" energy.

What a waste of money! Instead of spending the money that project; use it for mental health services. People who are intent on killing themselves will find some way to it. There are plenty of other options than just jumping off a bridge you know.

Great article, Barney. Barclay alerted me to it this morning. Wendy McCaw has certainly been a blight on the Santa Barbara News Press and the city of Santa Barbara in general. I remember when she first took over the paper, she said that she would leave the reporting to the "news paper professionals," or something along those lines. Sounds like she has done anything *but* leave the reporting to the "news paper professionals." She needs to just go away and reporting to the "news paper professionals."

Whoops, Bill Clausen, I think you're right! How time flies. I've been living in Reno, NV since '01 so I've been kinda out of the loop. My folks still subscribe to the NP. My dad sure complains about it though. Did not know about the changes at the Santa Ynez paper.
