Excellent news for the Painted Cave area! Hopefully all mandatory evacuations will be lifted in the next day or two. Amazing job well done to all the skilled emergency workers who bravely and diligently fought this menacing blaze!

Good news! Thanks for your prompt reply. My daughter, son in law and two grandsons live on top of the Painted Cave area. I live in Texas and may I please take a moment to commend the Independent for the excellent coverage during this fire. I have not only been able to keep up to date on the coverage but also post comments which have been graciously answered promptly by the staff. Because of you my heart has been lightened and my mind peaceful even though I am so far away from my family during this crisis. Bless you!

I too wonder why Painted Cave is still unavailable to residents. Is the fire still that close? An update on this last mandatory evacuated area would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for this report and for Ms. Wenner. I have been extremely concerned about the historic Painted Cave and this is the first word I've heard of the status. I'm praying for it to be protected and come through this horrible disaster unscathed. Although homes and personal belongings are quite painful to lose, they can be replaced. This majestic Cave cannot. Gloria

Many thanks to Gretchen Wenner who reported that Painted Cave was safe at the moment. Hopefully it will stay that way! Gloria

Does anyone know if the historic Painted Cave has been touched by the fire? It is so beautiful and peaceful to stand gazing at the ancient markings and one of the first places we visit whenever we come to Santa Barbara. Gloria
