Lack of economic growth in Goleta. Really? A more likely explanation is corporate mismanagement running it into the ground. In recent times, service has been spotty. When I have been there, there always seems to be a crowd.

Doesn't the city have an outside audit from a big accounting firm each year? Why didn't their audit work detect this sooner? This isn't a petty cash fund - serious money flows through this activity.

Is it cool to be in college or are they there to appease someone and don't care? Money is available for booze, beer, cigarettes and cell phones but not nominal tuition. How many scholarships does the SBCC Foundation and SB Scholarship Foundation hand out each year? With no skin the game there is no motivation to perform. Wander through any of our junior or senior high schools and the culture is beyond words. Parts of them look like a gang zone. All of the education dollars and education PhDs have not been able to morivate these kids and change their culture over many, many years. How does Mr. Williams expect to change that? In the words of the former Notre Dame QB who this week said he used "poor academic judgement". You got to go to class, do the work, make the commitment or get out. It's not going to happen if you don't go to class or do the work. Period.

My $4,000 stock investment which at one time was worth three times that is now worth less than $200. There are thousands of shareholders with much more invested than I who were wiped out by the stupidity of the banks' officers. The bank still has an advertising budget, though. Their banners appear above and below your article.

"Pananides represents the tourism business". Is Ms. Perotte that naive? He doesn't want any hotels built in Goleta to protect his monopoly. That was the issue 2 years ago when he supported Easton/O'Connell. Goleta is underserved in the hospitality industry. We need more choices

Serving on the city council is a full-time plus job. It's not simply showing up for 2 meetings per month. It pays $400/month, unlike Santa Barbara. One can't have a job or run a business and take this on. You have to be retired with a substantial income in order to do this. Most of us can't do it. I'm always amazed that you can find people who can do it.

Sales taxes are paid by the consumer. If Mr. Connell buys food for resale, he does not pay sales tax but collects it from me, the consumer and remits it to the state. I would be willing to pay the same sales tax for his food that I would pay any other food vendor. Perhaps there is another reason why he doesn't want to collect and pay over the sales tax - the paperwork?
