Good taste in responsible journalism should always triumph over profit margin -- I suggest the Indy get rid of the AmAp account and substitute a better retailer ad campaign.

This is a great idea, but only if the people who are running the program have experience in dealing with homelessness. The writer could amplify the important plea for help by outlining how this program is to be put into practical reality and state background qualifications for setting up and running this ambitious effort. I think many citizens would be willing to contribute to the project if more factual details could be presented.

I am in the process of writing my memoirs, and I can attest to how difficult it is to write a piece like this, and how very complicated it can be to sort out memories. Kudos to Starshine for her ability to set down in prose the incredibly mixed emotions with which she must relive her past.

Although the Indy is indeed a liberal-minded news and opinion outlet, I'm wondering if some of the more vituperative comments that appear here are really from "liberals" who are at long last getting fed up with the homeless situation -- or if they are from conservatives who have found themselves a good shooting gallery?

Just to set the record straight, nowhere in the bible does it say that the Lord helps those who help themselves; and Jesus certainly has not been reported as saying that either. The saying has been variously attributed to Aesop (of the "fables") and to Ben Franklin -- neither of whom are notable Christians.

Many of the people of St. Anthony's Community are long-time friends of mine, and I know them to be thoughtful, intelligent Catholics who are serious in their commitment to their God, their faith, and their community. I'm sure this decision to choose married priests as their pastors has been made with honest deliberation and a view to acceptance of an inevitable progress into the future.

One evening when some of my brood and I were sitting around a rather small table in a NYC cafe, my daughter-in-law asked snarkily: "So which of your six kids was the easiest to raise?" (Answer: the seventh one.)

My dear departed Russian friend had a word for those (whatever PC word is printable) drivers: she would open her car window and yell "Shish-Kabob!" I find that very satisfactory, without arousing road-rage.
