What is going on in Isla Vista and SBCC Mesa area is collision. We are exceeding occupancy rates by placing 2 - 3 students in a small 1 bd., charging $700.00 - $800.0o for a twin bed space and just like in chemistry the high density produces collision among the particles. The only reason UCSB was desolate for Halloween is because it looked like a jail. Is this the way we want to live? Where we cannot trust people to live well and must pay high enforcement fees because we are robbing them blind and lining the few 'Fat Cat' pockets from the real estate industry. What kind of education is the area providing? We are supposed to have one of the most educated communities in the country yet we are doing such a poor job in our own back yards.

the emotions brought forth by the words ' illegal immigrants' are telling. here we spend so much time and energy on approx. 11 million people when the Nation has a 316 million population; the expense is negligible. when we should be worried about the trends created by cutting opportunities, Americans [ any immigrant heritage ] who have no work, cannot be self-sustaining, productive and therefore healthy individuals. instead of worrying about 'word play' maybe we could take some of this energy for creating a more self-sustaining environment so that Americans [ everyone ] can live without food stamps, medi-caid or subsidized housing. Do some research and find out how many USA citizens must use these services, and yes gasp even in our small town, because of a lack of choice and opportunity. The SB area employs 10% of the workforce in work other than non-profits; this includes schools and health care. That is the top 5% everyone else is making a subpar wage in some kind of part-time work. My opinion is to work towards getting rid of these aids by making everyone a productive, active, self-sustaining, healthy, participant of the communities they live in. Yes, PODER may show us one side but we can look at many sides to this argument and see the inequities that do in fact exist for American citizens. There is nothing worse than ignorance - one of you writes about looking at the World over for which country functions without injustice and history reveals the greatest culprits usually do not last too long.
