Not to add fuel to the fires of xenophobia, but wasn't a newly-elected council member recently heard to say the following: "I don't want to see Elings park overrun by 'those BMX people' (or something to that effect)."
Sounds pretty "ist" to me! I guess the implication made is we're a menace to society.
Loon, the frisbee course in Goleta is AWESOME! My only beef is all the poison oak, but hey, that's nature & it's a way fun course. If you ever head out to the 9 hole in IV, pm me, we'll play a round or 2, right up the street from my apartment :) henry

AZ, something is SERIOUSLY wrong w/ the system as it stands. I think in the Jeschke case, even though what he did was MESSED UP, there were circumstances that were considered, such as the "victim's" willingness to participate. Still, that's NO excuse for the guy to walk away w/ probie only. However, if he gets the "sexual predator/offender" label, that guy's life is a life sentence of it's own. Still, the system needs fixing, no doubt & the disparity in punishment for the crime is apparent :) henry

DS, I don't think building a dirt ribbon w/ mounds on 0.97% of 5,662,800 sq. ft. (130 acres) of land is "developing every sq. in. of open space" like you said, especially if the design takes said open space into account & actually incorporates aspects of said open space.
If you notice the reasons for rejection of the EIR they have more to do w/ external issues rather than open space issues. Of course, the lights & PA issues weere exploited to the hilt, but that's how the process works.
Sez, as for expansion also being what you describe we can then assess that expansion also means those homes of those opposed built on what was once open space. Talk about the decimation of open space! That not only is expansion, it's development.
If you're talking about temporary expansion of population by a factor of 1,000 12 times/yr. that really is nothing compared to the population expansion that occurs during say Fiesta, Solstice or 4th of July in Santa Barbara.
Also, as a participant in the Bike Fest, please let me be the 1st to say that the 1,000 people figure doesn't fully get reached & if it does it isn't a long term figure.
you MAY get 1,000 people throughout the day, but it isn't a concentrated figure, more transient than anything.
I think all this fear of populational expansion is fueled by a xenophic mentality, which I heard plenty of during the DEIR hearing.
There are issues w/ the current plan, that's why a process exists to address the issues, re-plan, re-design & re-submit :) henry

Question: How can en entity such as Elings Park "expand" if it isn't going outside of it's set boundaries?
Everyone ooposed call this an expansion when in reality it is (in the simplest terms) "refurnishing" or relocating an internal entity from point a to poiint b within the park's set boundaries.
Well, the thing is that this gives the park an opportunity to take note of the "flaws" in the plan, redesign & resubmit :) henry

I think that the issue behind the North County Jail is due to the fact that a large portion or majority of the SB County Jail population happens to be mostly from the North County. This has always been the issue.
As for blaming the police because of a choice somebody made, can't go w/ that.
I like GotQuestions Chrysler/driver/skunk analogy. Maybe (& a BIG MAYBE, no implications intended) a big part of the problem is enablement through coddling. It's kind of like a neighbor I had a year ago & his legal dilemma:
His friend & him, on the way back from "visiting" a friend got pulled over by the police due to a broken tail light.
When the officer approached the car he smelled pot, when said officer looked in the backseat there was a scale & baggies.
The driver & passenger were asked to step out of the vehicle, were searched & @ this point the officer found 3 Vicodins in the passenger's pocket, no perscription.
Bottom line, they got busted w/ dealing & possession.
The guy w/ the Vicodind went to drug court, got a probationary status.
Well, 2 wks. later he was arrested again for public intoxication while running into parked cars on Del Playa. Urine tests showed the presence of 1,9-d-THC in his system.
Facing a possible jail sentence for probie violation, his parents sprung into action & got a doctor friend of theirs to issue their son a medicinal marijuana card to make the usage seem legal.
That is coddling @ it's worst & even worse was the fact thyat this guy could never accept resaponsibility for his actions. True story :) henry

It is mentalities the park is going against, just look @ some of the comments by some of those opposed to the proposed project in attendance @ the DEIR hearing:
1) "Competition is bad for children, it breeds violence!"
Personally, I think you got more to worry about w/ video games in this department, those are more violent than say BMX & they make the kids fat.
2) "BMX is nothing but a bunch of 35 yr. old guys going down the hils on $3500 bikes & that is criminal!"
Nothing to what BMX is, that's called mountain biking & as long as they stay on the designated trails there's no problem. Oh & it's not only for a bunch of 35 yr. old guys.
As you all can see, it's clearly a "mentality issue" & that's what Elings Park is up against. The whole process was interesting though & pretty 1 sided, given that somebody on the council already has it out for "those BMX types" (from a previous comment) :) henry
