Dr. O'Neill was my great great grandfather. Overall our family shares some of the same uncertainty about how he came to be in the United States, but a short autobiography written by Owen O'Neill, his son, for his 12 children shed some light on some of your points. This written account states that he attended Trinity College for seminary, but did not complete it. It also states that he went to the University of the Pacific (which opened a medical school in 1851 in California called California Wesleyan College). I have not had the opportunity to verify this information, so I also have to surmise about his origins (which, within our family, is understood to be Tipperary where we have met distant cousins and received an O'Neill family history based on historical record that names an Owen O'Neill who left Ireland in the 1840's).
