i am sorry but i CANNOT help but feel that surely with the technology we have at our disposal in 2009 we could have done more to prevent a wildfire from spreading that began in broad daylight.....we could not "afford" to save our entire mountain from destruction? with a full 24 hour heads-up?this was the best strategic minds could do? in the wealthiest town in the wealthiest country on the planet? we can push a button and send a nuclear bomb 10,000 miles with pinpoint accuracy to kill people but we cannot kill a fire?perhaps i am in shock and merely traumatized ....therefore, extremely disappointed as i did bare witness to what seemed a tidal wave of fire from my living room sofa destroy my favorite places in the world....perhaps i am paranoid....surely i am fortunate to have a home still....and i would hope i am fair and truly civic- minded.....but i really have tremendous faith in the skill set and collective talent of human beings as being slightly better than this.i am not qualified to assess the blame specificallyCERTAINLYbut, are you kidding me?we as a community somehow dropped the ball.were not our canyons more valuable than this?am i the only one who assumed they would be protectedmore than this? that this couldn't possibly happen in THISmanner? am i really so entitled?i have a suggestion for the chancellors at ucsb....less funding in nuclear weapons researcha little more in wildfire science thank you.
