Not to the group itself...you would just replace an anonymous bureaucracy with another one. Instead, a group of your local peers (fellow NRA members) would deem you fit for purchasing a gun or not.

I think it is obvious that the current background checks do not work. Maybe a NRA membership should become the requirement for purchasing a gun and ammunition. Background checks would be done by established and local NRA members (=peers) , which would also be accountable for any misuse.
