Sitting here in Copenhagen, Denmark, I find it a bit humorous that Colin Marshall describes Santa Barbara as a "blue city." I lived in SB for many years and while people seemed to fancy themselves as progressively-minded, their actions were anything but. They drove very large cars which were massively inefficient, they sent their children miles and miles away to go to schools that were as far away from minorities as could possibly be, and they fudged their tax forms to pay as little as possible to the government. Now I'm sure most Santa Barbarans will likely vote Democratic this year and pat themselves on the back as being good liberals. But I hope they can seriously look at themselves first and try to understand how they contribute to the "red" state of America. For example, if you talk about how you want universal health care for all, are you willing to pay for it? If you talk about a cleaner environment, are you willing to give up your SUV? Because living blue should not only be about who you vote for in November, but what you do in your life.

He was an amazing person and a great inspiration to me and many other students who took his class. I will miss him and I'm proud I got to call him my friend.
