I wish that our elected leaders had the courage to stand up for our communities most vulnerable citizens. It seems that they always make grand promises at election time and then when the vote comes, they fail to do the right thing. Even the most conservative among us has to have enough brain cells to do the math and figure out how much money can be SAVED by caring for people and avoiding tragic endings! Please, Supervisors, have some courage and really do the right thing.

Kudos to Indy for a story that addresses some questions and poses others that still elude answers. I have no doubt that the journalists following this story will work to bring the truth to us all about the lingering financial woes of this dept. Let's hope the solutions are also news worthy.
This story is far from over.

So if you think Santa Barbara has a homeless problem now, just wait and see what happens when 800 people lose their services! I think every rational person wants government to operate within a balanced budget, but is anyone in govt. going to admit that it will cost more to stop serving people?

"attack with a friendly weapon"? what a horrible and shallow characterization of rape! in fact, there were 2 bites, one to the face and one to the butt. NOTHING friendly about it!

With all due respect to your question maybe that is why court cases are not conducted in the media. I was a juror on this case and I can honestly say that there was not just one single piece of evidence that proves his guilt. Rather it was the combined and ample pieces of evidence that became insurmountable to have reasonable doubt. We had no racial agenda, we were very deliberate in our questioning of our individual and collective beliefs and in the end we all agreed he was guilty. You would have to have been there in court everyday and started out and kept an objective frame of mind to do this work. It was very difficult for all of us.
One of the many things I have learned thru this experience is that some people are so blindly enamoured with talented athletes and so incredibly cruel to rape victims.

Our community should be prepared for many more horrific stories about the consequences of not caring for the mentally ill. It does not take a great imagination to start to connect the dots... no funding for care = homelessness and community tragedies.
