starbucks started as a mom and pop operation and managed to achieve the american dream. they almost tanked themselves making a replicable product which no one wants to invest enough to replicate and continue to thrive. they pay employees well and provide health insurance to those working 40 hours a week.

yes it's a little sad when corporate coffee houses take over but our local competition is pitiful by comparison. when a local coffee house employs hand-washing people and pays them a reasonable wage and makes a good cup of coffee, they'll get my vote.

waiting for toxicology results does not suggest that there are theories on how she died but theories on WHICH drugs killed her. come on.

yes, a tragedy. yes, tacky to share theories about it. yes, an open forum. don't like it? don't read it.

This N. Fairview resident checks the Indy reports last thing at night and first thing in the morning. You are doing an incredible service to this community with your updates. Every time I check there is new, relevant information presented with care from one of your reporters - including reports obviously written in the wee hours in the morning when only you guys and the firefighters are still out working. It's of absolutely no surprise to me that you outshined your print competition in town. The surprise is that no other outlet including live television and radio has the information that your website does. Incredible work. Stunning, really. I agree on the Pulizer. Can Ben Preston, Ray Ford, Nick Welsh and co. all split it?

Does Jill work at Fairview Gardens? Or is she SB's most under-the-radar plagiarist? I just read this on a sign at Fairview Gardens down to the Mark Twain quote. Is anyone proofreading over there?

Thanks to Paul Wellman for sticking to his guns. Thanks to Nick for reminding us why he had to. Thanks to the good work of some of the folks at the Indy who are desperately trying to keep this town honest.

On Dog Got Your Tongue?

Although I have not seen the new Granada yet, all the feedback I have gotten is that the only people who will notice a real difference are in technical positions. Directors, Stage Managers, Sound Coordinators, etc. have been falling all over themselves with excitement at the doors the new facilities will open for arts in Santa Barbara. My other friends agree with the writer. Can we really judge a rebuilt Thunderbird engine by the paint job? Come on...

isn't the message here that we need to clean up our act? surely the sharks are continuously more attracted to dirtier, smellier water? thanks for the horrifying photo.

On The Fear Beneath

Is this supposed to be the best drinking and driving first date story?? I am sure they are a lovely couple but without further clarification... this is a lousy representation of an "Independent Woman" and an even lousier message to send to SB couples.
