Replacement cost and guaranteed replacement cost doesn't actually mean it's replaced.

Guaranteed replacement cost for the structure is very rare these days.

Replacement cost or limited replacement cost will only pay x % over the policy limit.

Many of us were seriously under insured and we had replacement policies - between insurance issues and issues with the city (permits, review boards, code upgrades, etc) there is not enough money to rebuild normal homes (forget custom).

I wish the Keltners the best but realistically it's been 7 months since the tea fire and we're no furhter along than she is (and out local agent still hasn't called us nor returned our calls)

5.) It is unconstitutional to harass, falsely imprison, deny civil liberties or "polite ejection" anyone from anywhere in the U.S.A including Santa Barbara.

As it is illegal to be harassed by the homeless. It is illegal to drink or be drunk in public. It is illegal to trespass and to loiter. All of this is done everyday by the local homeless.

Forcing them to obey laws is not unconstitutional.

Isn't the BAR also a RESTAURANT? Who cares where the meeting was held? If the meeting had been about alcoholism then I could understand the problem.

"If you don't want to look at poor and homeless people, move to the moon and let the rest of us get on with the serious business of making the world we live in the best place it can be...for EVERYONE."

See I'm not so much interested in making the world the best place for people who don't care to help themselves. I'm interested in making the world a better place for those who want it to be better, for those who are willing to put the time and effort into making it better, helping those that really need help.

Most of our homeless population offer nothing back to society. They are disgusting drunks that are getting more and more aggressive. They are taking up valuable real estate on our sidewalks and beaches. They are homeless by choice.

Couldn't the homeless do something to make the world a better place for everyone? Pick up garbage along the roads and beaches, pull weeds somewhere, plant trees or flowers. Why should the gainfully employed tax payers continue to shoulder the burden for a group of people that simply don't care enough to see tho their own personal hygiene let alone care enough to make this a "better world for everyone".

Before you all crucify me about the mentally ill homeless, I'm not taking about them. I'm taking about the people who made a choice to live like a vagrant, the ones who made the choice to drink and use drugs to the point of homelessness (yes, it is a CHOICE). There will always be poverty and homelessness and yes we should be compassionate but to what end?

I wonder how the adjacent homeowners feel about the set back requirements being waived. Most of the houses in question are only 10-15 feet away from each other as it is, already encroaching into the existing set backs. (The zoning in that area changed sometime after the homes were originally built.

Pope - Why should there be higher taxes to live in that area? Our taxes are high enough thank you very much.

In case you didn't know we already pay additional taxes for fire suppression efforts.

We pay a higher premium with our insurance companies.

Our neighborhood didn't see the first fire truck until after 11:00 o'clock that night, several hours after the homes all burned to the ground. Even if we all paid higher taxes it wouldn't have saved our homes at all so what's the point.

If you want someone to pay for the cost of fighting the fire then tax those "young adults" that started the fire.

Perhaps the solution is to make sure that those individuals that start fires are punished enough to prevent others from doing the same thing.

All of us that lost our homes have been punished enough and don't need insult to injury.

We had cleared our brush, most of us more than the city requires.

We are paying to rebuild our homes and lives, many of us grossly under-insured.

We don't need more taxes for heaven's sake.

On A Closer Look at the Wildfire Problem

Rant_Abarbara - Whatever!!! Get a clue and read the darn story. We don't want to be behind any sort of locked gate that closes down an integral escape route for anyone living in that area. Most of us don't want to behind gates of any sort.

Rich people you say - obviously you don't know much about the area do you? Most of the homes that burned were single family homes, no larger than 1000-1300 square feet. They were built in the early 60's and for the most part haven't changed.

You can sit on your throne and complain all you want about the "rich" people or get off your a$$ and help out the people who lost their homes. The renters with no insurance living in a slum because it's what they could afford. The older, retired couple who bought their house brand new in 1961 and planned to die there (they almost did).

Katie,

Thank you for voicing this so eloquently. We also lost our home and agree with you 100%.

The things remembered and taken and those things left behind.

It doesn't matter how well prepared you are to evacuate, how much time you spend thinking about the possibility, you can have an evacuation list but it's never enough, when faced with a fire out your window survival mode kicks in and the list, while helpful, is just paper and can't help with the frantic emotions of the last seconds of evacuation. A plan is good and that's what allowed us to be so well prepared but it requires having your home office and important papers staged well before a fire hits.

PC's are easy to remember as are the important pictures and photos (which we were able to evacuate with).

If I had known that was the last opportunity I had to grab personal possessions I would have done things a little differently. I thought we were just evacuating to be safe, little did I know that our house would be one of the first on my street to burn.

I would have stopped cooking dinner (yes, I was really cooking dinner while evacuating, my mind simply could not let go of the routine, the fire was still far enough away, at least at first).

I wish I had remembered to open my hope chest and get the kids art work. I wish I had remembered to grab a couple of my favorite cookbooks. I wish I had remembered to grab the remodel folder with all the color choices and model numbers of our almost completed remodel. I wish I had let my 10 year old son back into his room to grab some of his mementos. I wish, I wish, I wish...

I wish this was November 12th and the Tea Fire 10 had decided that a bonfire was probably not the best idea...

I'm thankful that my family and my friends and neighbors were all safe. I'm thankful we were able to grab what we did, many were not.

I'm so sorry for the Hoffman's who were so grievously injured :(

On Embers to Ashes

Posted on December 2 at 7:51 a.m.

What is really annoying me is that the police and DA won't announce the names of the the "Tea Fire 10" responsible. There has been no talk of prosecution, community service, financial responsibility - nothing!! They should be involved in the recovery process. They should be out there rummaging through the ashes and mud and muck with those of us who lost our homes. They should be out there dumping the ashes and burned up personal possessions in the dumpsters. They should individually visit each and every person who lost their home or car or garage or in the case of Lance and Carla Hoffman their lives they way they knew it to be, 29 years old and they'll have painful scars they rest of their lives - all because of 10 "adults" stupidity. They should be at the hospital bringing food and water to the family and begging for forgiveness.

Don't misunderstand me - I don't want them in jail, I don't want they rest of their lives ruined. I want to see personal responsibility either forced through our legal system or better yet, forced by their own sense of decency.
