I agree that declawing is cruel, and I would never do it. However, I agree that legislating behavior, unless backed up by very stiff penalties, is pretty useless. In fact, even with good enforcement, such laws are often flouted. A good example is seat-belt laws.

The demise of the NP has moved Santa Barbara more quickly to what appears to be the future of journalism. I have been forced to rely on the web to get my news.

The Independent has done a fabulous job with its web coverage, and it's now the first place I turn. Then I consider other news sources to balance Indy's point of view to form my own opinion. This includes (non-exhaustive list), the wonderful EdHat aggregation for source material, Noozhawk, several bloggers and Daily Sound.

Kudos to all local media sources who have stepped up to the plate to give us news when the NP imploded!

I miss the print media, but then it is inevitable that it will go away, and the Indy is well positioned for web only journalism.

Great article, Lisa! Very informative about chickens. I'd never given it a thought before but it could be a possibility. You would need to make sure coyotes don't get them either.

Benjamin makes a good point.

If only drivers would slow down, stop drinking/driving and stop texting/talking, the roads would be safer. Oh, and keep their cars maintained and tires properly inflated would help too. Personal responsibility, anyone??

Michelle, a sad truth and well written.

The other aspect that you touch on, but could use more discussion, is that "mindless indoorism" seems to rob many of social skills and zest for life.

Minds, as well as their bodies grow flabby. Many of our children (and grandchildren) seem incapable of carrying on a conversation and appear to have little interest or curiosity in the world around them.

Hi E. Menzies:
Please don't confuse Dennis with Randy. Dennis is way cool and way cute!

The focus of this debate should be 3-pronged: (1) payer (which is where all the focus is); (2) delivery - i.e. federal? State? County? - how/where administered? method of providing service and paying providers; and (3) immigration. There must be a discussion if to provide, and if so, how to provide, health care for millions of illegal immigrants. This third "prong" of discussion is "the elephant in the living room" that neither political party has been willing to address.

Great column, Lisa. "Simon" always has me guffawing. Your videos now have at least one more viewer.

Thank you, Lisa, for another insightful and well-written article. I only hope that people who do get a guinea pig read your article (or do their own research) before they buy a live animal as a "toy" for their child.
