Maybe the reason I differ with guys like DrDan is more visceral than I let on in my earlier post when I brought up Switzerland and "authority figures", two subjects, by-the-way, nobody including the good doctor has addressed yet, maybe it's all the impoverished people around the world that will still fall dead from American bullets whether I have a gun or not. If you think disarming me is going to make you safer then you have a shaky view of reality, a reality in which your tax-dollars have armed the greatest army in history, the U.S. Army, and sent them out to kill every "raghead", "coon" and "rice-eater" in the world who has something you (or a Corporation) need(s), you know, oil, opium, tungsten, coffee, diamonds...spices. Yep, killed them by the hundreds-of-thousands, even nuked a few thousand, but you want MY gun? Wow.

Leave it to a cop to describe his romance with guns and then, in practically the same sentence, support gun-control. Par for the course in a society that is discovering how little trust it can really place in it's "authority figures", by whom I mean priests, politicians, cops, military authorities, teachers and boy-scout leaders, all examples of groups that claim to serve the public but seem to be interested in serving themselves when noone's looking.

Go to Switzerland and count the number of assault-rifles found in the homes of it's citizenry and then come back and tell me that the author of this article knows what he's talking about. Better yet, just type in: Wikipedia/Switzerland/gun-control and read the article you find there...then pull your head out of the sand and ask yourself what REALLY causes gun-violence in this country.

When was the last time a congressional candidate implimented any "grand ideas"? Any politician who makes it that far has already sold-out to the status-quo and from there-on only impliments a kind of socio-political stasis that benefits very few Americans.

Thank you Bill, Howdy, Hank...I'm getting the idea that your dad is ill or has recently overcame some dire condition, Bill, so don't get him all worked up unnecessarily. When he's ready I'm interested, especially in the Astronomy-themed stuff...I like good art...I LOVE art with practical/scientific meaning behind it. From cells to stars and everything in between...Thanks.

Let this, then, serve as my official apology to pigs. I'll leave it to you to frame it in whatever language you deem appropriate. (I can't help thinking though, that maybe, Etna notwithstanding, we could call them...Swine? Or is that too much like pigs?)

If Lawdy is implying that the homeless are single-handedly responsible for the deplorable conditions on State Street he/she has never strolled up the street in question on a Saturday night (or Wednesday, or Thursday or Friday...). The bar-hoppers and tourists, if there's a difference, are in rare form on these nights and are clearly delighted to add their share of trash, puke and urine to the general mess already existing. Of course the natural reaction to that, from those of Lawdy's ilk at least, will likely be to point out that "at least the bar-hoppers are spending money" and that's where the whole discussion will be derailed and become a true waste of time. I'll try to lessen the inevitable, coming confusion beforehand though, by framing the question this way: Is this about money or the public welfare? If it's about the public welfare then the focus should be upon ALL of us policing our filthy little habits, not just the homeless. By the way, I'm homeless myself and I make it a point to clean up after, not just myself, but others. When I enter a filthy public restroom I pick it up as best I can before I use it and give it the once-over before I leave: I'll be damned if I'll be perceived as the "dirty bum" who trashed it. I wonder how many drunken UCSB students or Serbian truck-drivers here on vacation do the same thing?
In closing, this discussion can deteriorate into a class issue or it can be framed as a societal issue or it can be punked and paraded as a "didn't your mother teach you better" issue but in the end it's really a simple matter of integrity and respect...some have it and some don't and it don't come free when you get a Master Card.

The Ayatollah would have had the girl beaten to death with an axe-handle (for fornication) and shook his finger at the perpetrators (with a knowing smile).

If you ask me ALL laws are arbitrary because they're trying to dress our myriad moral uncertainties in rational clothing so that they can be formalized and paraded as absolutes. However, besides death few things are absolute, they are situational at best. In this situation two men isolated an immature girl and sexually double-teamed her and they are PIGS and the suicide of the one goes a long way toward proving that even they (or, at least he) KNEW they were pigs.

I'm sure the same complaints were common among the citizens of every city that's ever been founded, from Ur to Rome to London to New York: Those damn (add nationality) street-gangs and those damn poor people are ruining our city! Of course, nobody ever seriously addressed the underlying issues that gave birth to the problems, they only shouted for more cops (which gave birth to another problem: out of control, fascist-style cops). Santa Barbara: Suck it up, it's only going to get worse.
